Hi, I'm hoping someone can assist. What is the difference between .22LR cartridges and .22LR High Velocity cartridges? Are both ok for an indoor range? Thanks!

It's just faster. Most ranges you can shoot all .22lr ammo. So yes I would shoot it. If the range has a "speed limit" just stay under it.

I don't know of any indoor ranges were .22LR HV would be an issue.

BUT, as my Wife has taken up shooting mostly .22LR I have learned a lot about what works and what doesn't and why.

HV ammo in pistols is probably NOT a good idea unless the particular gun/conversion kit SPECIFICALLY instruction sheet tells you to use it.

Examples:
- Ruger Single Six revolver - HV ammo shoots OK, but pushing the empties out (it's a Single Action job with a ramrod type deal for removing one case at a time) was a challenge. Using Std Vel ammo, no big problem.
- Jams in many semi-autos that aren't made for HV ammo. Std Vel ammo runs fine.
- Advantage Arms .22LR conversion kit for Glock SPECIFICALLY tells you to use Rem Golden Bullets (HV) and they run great. Instructions explain that Std Vel may not cycle properly causing malfunctions.
- Ciener .22LR conversion kit for 1911 works fine with Rem Golden Bullets too. Other ammo tried caused malfunctions or worse (leading up barrel big-time with Rem Thunderbolts HV).

Thanks guys... I bought a Walther P22 pistol and the docs inside are telling me to use .22LR High Velocity.... I wanted to make sure of it....

Is Remington Thunderbolt really HV? I thought that was their cheap stuff. It seems dirty and low quality to me.

I find the Velocitor ammunition works real well in a Ruger MkII autoloading pistol, probably better than anything else I've used, but it is relatively expensive compared to the bulk-pack stuff.

It is marked HV. Stats might tell more but Remington's website is crap and has no useful info on 22 ammo.

It is certainly very dirty and low quality!

There are some guns that like the stuff, but you need to be very careful if yours doesn't like it. The leading will drive you crazy and could be dangerous if that is the case.

I bought one 500 rd pack of thunderbolt when i got my marlin 60. I had easily over 50 ftf's. In addition to the ftf's many of them were underpowered. Have been using federal bulk pack since and have had maybe 5 out of about 1500 rds ftf.

I'd love to get my hands on some decent .22 ammo. It seems like it is either high-end hunting, high-end target, or just cheap stuff that doesn't work right.

All we want is some decently powered stuff, which is somewhat consistent, decently powered for all around use, and doesn't cost a ton. We know it won't come in as cheap as a $11 for 550 rounds at Walmart, but how about $3 for 50 rounds?

Group buy? Maybe an NES special at Four Seasons? I miss "The Fair" and "Spag's". Any deals out there?

Have you tried CCI Mini Mags?

Remington plain old "green box" standard velocity.

Ya know, Remington has too many irons in the fire. I get the golden bullets, the "green box", and the Thunderbolt all confused for the same thing. Maybe it is the lack of differentiation in the boxes or something, or just inattentiveness on my part.

Oh yeah, Happy New Year everyone.

IT SHOOTS IN ALL OF OUR RUGERS HANDGUNS, RIFLES, 1911 , GLOCK CONVERSOINS AS WELL AS OUR TACTICAL SOLUTIONS .22 CAL AR15 UPPERS.

Coyote33: Have you tried the Federal 550 value packs from Walmart? My two 10/22's and one of my Ruger MkIII's like them. The other is still being broken in and is experiencing the "Ruger Stove Pipe". The CCI Mini Mag HP 36 that Jim Conway had me try worked flawlessly.

Agree with this 100%.
This ammo runs like a champ and is very clean.
You can get it at Dicks. I think its $6.99 or $7.99 per 100 in the plastic tray..
But buy 3 or 4 packages and use a coaches coupon of $10 off $25 and the price drops to $5 per tray or $2.50 per 50.

Secret on the coaches coupon is don't use it over $25. Buy $25 worth of stuff, use the coupon and leave. Come back tomorrow or later and do it again. Saves $20 vs just $10 on a $50 purchase.

i have some crappy stuff to shoot through, but once i'm done, i'm going back to CCI and NEVER GETTING ANYTHING ELSE AGAIN... [laugh]

I've been shooting .22s for 45 years and never had problems until a couple years ago. I've tried the cheap stuff from time to time and sometimes found it lacking in accuracy, but not in reliabilty. Nowadays, even buying the 'name brand' stuff is no guarantee that it will function in your gun or even fire reliably. When the quality of nearly every other manufactured product has been greatly increased by modern technology, why has .22 ammo gone the opposite way?

I think that it is time to call the manufacturers on the carpet for some straight answers.

...

It doesn't seem to be too much to ask.

1. What is this "coaches coupon"?

2. Still wishing for a CCI mini-mag bulk pack option!

3. This is a new one to me, even though the article is 2007.

If only this were available in bulk packs of 500 for $12:
Building a Faster .22 LR - Aguila Does It Again!

4. So, anybody know anywhere in Mass. where one can get this Aguila Interceptor?

I don't know about MA, but CMP (Civilian Marksmanship Program) is selling Aguila, but now there is a pretty good wait.

My opinions YMMV:
1) I don't believe there are any 'jacketed' 22LR rounds. There are plated rounds, but no range I have ever shot at has had an issue with plated rounds. More ranges I have shot at have had 'no exposed lead' and for those the plated rounds are great.
2) CCI ammo is definitely the best of the standard manufactures(low to mid end stuff). You can get standard velocity or mini-mags. Some of my guns like the high velocity of the mini-mags, some of them like standard velocity.
3) Remington across the board is the least reliable of any of the major brands. I haven't found a gun that will shoot the green box. I Had 3 bricks of it, and couldn't get more than 5-10 shots before a FTF. Definitely couldn't get through a 10 round mag with my 10/22 - which has never had a problem with any other ammo, including bulk Federal or Winchester. They were great for training with the revolver for dud drills.
4) Of the bulk packs I have found Federal to be the best, but YMMV. As I posted before I had a buddy that got 3-4 'bad' bulk packs that had a higher rate of failures (maybe 1:50) normally I would say it is more like 1:100.

I think I recall reading in the user manual that the Ciener AR15 conversion bolt that I bought said to use HV copper coated .22LR. Not sure if that was to help it cycle better, or to somehow keep the gas system cleaner.

BossHarley, is that the Aguila Interceptor , which referred to in the article?

Coyote - I just went back to the site and they changed the listings, so I cannot be sure whether it was the interceptor or not. However they currently have:

22LR Target Golden Eagle CENTURION, Manuf - Aguila-5000 rnds per case. 40 gr., lead projectile, 1200 fps. at muzzle-standard velocity. $305/case 5000 $19.95 shipping

Some times fast isn't better, for instance a pistol like a S&W Model 41 demands a standard Velocity round like a CCI SV with a FPS of 1155. The heavier recoil from a hotter FPS not only batters it's frame, it also forces the slide to work faster than it should resulting in rounds trying to chamber before the fired round can be ejected and that usally cause a stove pipe jam or a fired round jammed standing up in the chamber.

This chart is good for matching up the best FPS for your 22lr.

Wolf Match Extra (aka SK Jagd Match) is superb. More money than the cheapo bulk packs, but a lot less than the top shelf stuff from Eley and Lapua.
