The word is that Mark Cohen of the Powderhorn has been working with a retired Army Colonel about opening up the old Army range for civilian use. Those are the only details I have right now. This would be great I live right across the highway from there.

Given the environmental issues at Otis, I would not hold my breath. IIRC, the military has been limited to using "green" ammunition at Camp Edwards.

I have had some interesting interactions with the MA NG at a facility that I will not say. They were very good with us, but they have got major control issues. I would not count on it either.

Many years ago lots of people from the state association volunteered their time and money to clean up a range and get it into shape, only to have a post commander offer up so many absurd rules as to make it impossible to use the facility for much of anything. If I remember, there were only a couple of shots fired to re christen it and then it was never allowed to be used. Lots of hard feelings.

If it is opened it would be the only one in New England with the exception of EAFR. I'd love to shoot there.

I hope it happens but I'm not holding my breath.
If it does happen, it'll be a reason for a new rifle!

They were ordered to stop using lead ammo in the 90's. They began testing tungsten-nylon ammo and then found tungsten-nylon in the ground water. So that was stopped.
What's the allowed ammo now?

bpm:

Are you sure that was MA NG that you were dealing with?

At a particular secret military base here in MA where things went downhill greatly for us civilian shooters, the problem was the base commander. The base commander was full-time Army, not MA NG. One of the "civilian shooters" was also a Colonel in the MA NG. He went to speak with the base commander, Colonel to Colonel, but got nowhere.

I read in the Times this summer that someone was using lead, not knowing they were not suppose to. Typical sensationalistic reporting. So imagine the soy ammo is still the only one you can use. So M1911 brings up a good point.

I'll think pleasant thoughts and hope it happens.

Like I said previously, given the environmental issues involved at MMR and the ammunition restrictions placed on the guard as a consequence, I'd be greatly surprised if they opened up a 1000 yard range to civilian use.

I just got back from Leonard Wood and they had a range we could use with personal owned weapons. Do any of these offer military to shoot with these also? I think my range only goes to 200 yards...

Green ammo went out years, ago. They have been re-activating ranges for training. They have a number of ranges which had been closed.
The level of activity had diminished. They were shooting tungsten at only one active range. Yet, Tungsten levels rose rapidly in a short period of usage. Wise individuals realized that tungsten has a considerably higher leaching rate.

They have been redeveloping the berms with an idea for total lead containment. I saw a presentation by a PA Major.

He use to run some single shot Sharps rifle events down there before 9/11

I'm not sure which range he's refering to as a 1,000 yard range

Range Alpha is for M2s but its far shorter than that

Ranges Bravo-Kilo are 25 meters (or 10 meter ranges for sidearms)

Lima: grenade launchers

November, Papa, Tango: 25 meter

Oscar: shotguns

Know distance east and west: ranges have around 20firing postions that go back at least 600 meters but they also use that range for Dragon and TOW missles so i doubt thats it

the best guess i have as to what the "1,000 yard range" is could be sierra east and west as it's called the "modified record range" and it is cut WAY into the impact area...

but as far as civilans being allowed to use it i seriously doubt it as it's DEEP in the range on the north side of the impact area and the only way to get to it is to drive past the forward operating base mockup and through where the troops are doing land-nav and where they are using the roads and intersections out on the range to simulate ambushes as they will see in Iraq and Afghanistan sooo not exactly where they are going to let "Joe Six-shooter" drive around without an escort lol

now if someone affiliated with the Army is going to try to hold an event for civilians in between units utilizing the FOB for training... MAYBE, but the range is busier now than i've seen in 7 years and it's only getting busier with more troops coming through on their way overseas... i mean it's not like military or civilian personel assigned to the base can even go and use the ranges on a whim... imo there is no way they are going to open any ranges for regular use unfortuently

as far as the lead bullet issue i know ranges Kilo and Tango use the STAPP containment system and are approved for lead bullets but i'm not sure what other ranges have been upgraded for lead

Golf Range? That one goes out a ways... (Pop-up MG Range). Isn't there a "Sniper range"..Didn't the 10th SF SOTIC guys have a "Sniper range"?

when i talked to one of the fellows at powderhorn about this "new range" last year, it was 300 yards, not 1,000. the conversation began over my interest in long-range competition shooting.

perhaps the "word" is getting stretched. it's been a year or more, now, right?
