Happy birthday to me, Happy birthday to me!
[party][party][party]

I finally got one. Looks like a walnut stock, cheapie KMart scope, 116 prefix serial, a preban[wink]
Not bad for $100, huh? Can you say LTR?

LTR = Liberty Training Rifle
A idea from the Appleseed Project. Basically, it involves turning a 10/22 into a mini battle rifle for marksmanship training. Similar ergonomics to an M1A, but with FAR FAR cheaper ammo. The key features are military style aperture sights and a USGI sling.

Scopes are acceptable on an LTR as well.

The name was coined by Grin Reaper, IIRC.

If you want details on how to build one, we can get a thread up.

OK, here's Nickle's post on the subject from www.appleseedinfo.org from this thread.

Nickle said:
Well, here's what I did (or will do, in the case of a couple items), the cost of the items, and this is a decent priced, working setup. All prices are retail. They are not special or sale prices, nor are they group buy prices. These are 24/7/365 retail prices.

First, I started with Ruger 10/22 Carbines.

Add Tech Sights. Add DPMS Rapidex knob, for ease of adjusting (optional).
http://www.tech-sights.com/ruger3.htm $55.00
http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=353544 $8.49

Install sling swivels studs, detachable swivels and a USGI M1 Garand type sling.
http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=366960 $2.49
http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=270453 $6.79
http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=777813 $10.29, black, also comes in green.

Add extended mag release.
http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=662086 $4.49

Replace bolt release and hammer (or rework existing ones). I reworked mine. Not for the inexperienced.
http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=145851 $35.99

Add a BoreSnake, sight adjusting tool and spare mags.
http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=260083 $14.49
http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=260328 $6.99
http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=252579 $12.99 each. I recommend at LEAST 3 of them.

My comments after 3 Appleseed Shoots and building 4 LTRs:

1: You want FOUR 10-round mags total. Not two 25 rounders (they get in the way when you're shooting prone) but 4 10 rounders. 'Cause Nickle is a HUGE believer in the 40-shot rapid fire AQT - 40 rounds in 4 minutes. You do NOT have time to reload mags during that.

2: there is a TON of good information on working on the 10/22 action on www.rimfirecentral.com. Info on how to lighten up the trigger yourself, info on how to make your own auto bolt release, etc. Use that site; it's a great reference.

3: You can find lots of cheap factory parts for the 10/22 on eBay. People buy new barrels, stocks, etc, and their first thought is "Gee, let me sell it!". That's to your benefit. I picked up a stock in good shape for about $30 total so I could experiment on cutting it down for a shorter length of pull since I'm a short guy. Worked great, and if I'd screwed it up, I could just have put my old stock back on; no harm, no foul.

If you come to an Appleseed where I'm teaching, you're going to NEED those mags.

We cranked out over 500 rounds this past weekend. Rapid Fire AQT after Rapid Fire AQT. 40 rounds, 4 minutes, 4 distances (simulated), 3 positions.

Ross has built 3. I've built 4 true LTR's of my own, and 2 more scoped ones. Plus alterations for other people. We're telling you what WORKS.

A 4 MOA (or less) 10/22 for well under $400? That's the price of 500 rounds of .308, .223 or .30-06 ammo.

Nice... Mine is a 116 (1976 Production) and I paid $125 for it (used) in 1985.
(It's the fancy stock version.)
Mine appears to be 1976 too. The next 3 in the serial after the - is 118.
The KMart scope is the same that's on my old Marlin 60 that came from KMart. I bet this 10/22 came from there too.
Fancy stock version? What's that?
ETA: Just found on the left side of the BBL just above the woodline "Made in the 200th Year of American Liberty"

I'm taking the scope off. I'll be adding the Tech sights, sling swivels, Ext mag release and bolt release.

I'm looking for a take-off stock, I don't want to muck this one up.

I guess the whole LTR thing is a new trend with the 10/22. Green Mt makes a M1 carbine style stock and a neat Tommy Gun type ribbed bbl. Have tried the stock and it's nice. The LTR style is not my thing but I guess for some.
Funny seeing a 10/22 referred to as "preban". $100 is a STEAL!

I started an LTR thread in the Appleseed Training forum so we don't hijack Jon's thread any more than it has been.

This is the "Deluxe Sporter" Version. Sucky scope doesn't come with it. My next three
SN digits are 481. Checkered foregrip and handle area. Deluxe walnut stock, sling swivels,
flat buttplate. Other than that I think it is the same as yours. Your wood is specified as
'hardwood' so it is probably beech but hardwood covers a lot of territory so it really could
be most anything in the hardwood families. It doesn't look like walnut though. I like that
inscription. I wish mine had it.

Everyone needs a 10/22![wink] Great present JonJ.

BTW... how about some info in this thread http://northeastshooters.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=32755
regarding the Appleseed LTR 10/22, or maybe a thread of its own in the build section. I haven't checked that section in ages and for all I know there could be a few posts there regarding tech sights, etc. but I myself like the idea of making a 10/22 into a US military style battle rifle and plan on building one this summer.
I have two 10/22 builds that I've done and love tinkering with these little gems.[smile]
This book http://www.amazon.com/Ultimate-Ruger-Manual-Users-Guide/dp/1581600747
is great for info and tips.

I did a bit of looking around rimfirecentral.com to see what was up with the inscription. Evidently, Ruger stamped it on every firearm they built in '76. The buttplate is metal. They switched to a plastic plate sometime around 76-77.

Now I have a problem. I wanted a 10/22 to convert to a LTR. I'm not sure I want to do this to this rifle. The inscription doesn't really increase the value that much but it appears that they are somewhat collectible. If it had the box and papers it would be much more collectible.
So I either have to look for another 10/22 or work on this one. I may have to burn my $100 Dick's gift card.
I guess if I used this rifle for an LTR, the inscription would be fitting for it.[wink]

You are right. I just looked on the serial numbers on the Ruger site and mine is a '77.
I got the build date right from the factory in a letter and they must have made an error.
First serial # in 1977 was 116-25017. Mine is 116-481. I'll have to adjust my records.

ETA: I've thought about 'bubba-ing' this over the years I have owned it and every time
I take it out to look at it I fall in love again with how it looks and put it back. I just can't
trash this beautiful rifle with anything other than what clothes she came with.

Sorry, guys... I don't see the sentimentality of the thing. My 10/22 was my first rifle, purchased in 1981. She now wears a Weaver K7, an extended mag release, has an auto bolt release and trigger work by Nickle and is sporting a tasteful GI sling.

Far as I'm concerned, turning Sting into an LTR has given her a new lease on life. She was languishing away in the gun safe for months at a stretch, never getting out to the range. Now? She gets out and gets shot much more often! And that's what a rifle is meant to do - shoot. Not be a collectible.
