Scottie Sheffler was arrested by Louisville police while apparently going around a police roadblock on his way to Valhalla CC for the second round of the PGA Tournament (a major). He was charged with second degree assault on an officer, failing to heed an officer's directions, and a few more things. A person had just been killed after being hit by a shuttle bus and there were cops everywhere. The PGA delayed start times to avoid a total shitshow (not to mention the millions of dollars bet on the tourney) and apparently Sheffler was released (and probably given a police escort) and has made it to the course in time for his tee time. (Not being on the tee at the prescribed time results in a DQ). I can't imagine what strings were pulled and frantic phone calls made to get him out of jail and to the course. It would have been a huge black eye for the PGA, Louisville, and the cops if he were DQed.

Why would it be a black eye for anyone other than the arrested?

Pfwah. This guy has professional golfer money. I bet his personal helicopter brought him from the police station right to the green, and the Chief and Mayor rode with him and drank champagne while they talked about how they could avoid this being a problem at reelection time with a little extra campaign funding.

… have you seen the number of times police blow things out of proportion and escalate situations before fabricating charges?

We have no idea what actually happened on scene. Maybe he did assault an officer while trying to force his way through the scene of the shuttle bus accident. Or… maybe he innocently tried to find another route and a cop took his driving as an assault with a deadly weapon because the officer was vaguely in the direction of travel. I’ve seen crazier claims by police before.

Oh I know. This is akin to " Jamarqwua Dindu arrested last night for DWI and assault, luckily he was able to make Sundays divisional playoffs" I mean, could you imagine how that would affect the offense? C'mon man, F these people.

Totally agree. Word is, the police were pretty hyped up from a pedestrian being killed earlier in the day, hit by a transport shuttle in the early, dark and rainy hours of the morning.

Because this is one of the four most important tournaments in the world. Cities all over the country compete to host it. Because it's the number one golfer in the world. That may not mean anything to you, but it does to tens of million people, the PGA (the only major they run), the networks that paid millions to televise it, and the millions of dollars bet on it. Also, you are assuming he is guilty, which he may not be. I don't care if golf is unimportant to many--there are lots of things (like soccer) that I don't much care about, but I still recognize that were Cristiano Ronaldo to be arrested on his way to a World Cup game, it would be huge news.

My guess on what happened.

Traffic was a complete cluster because of the pedestrian / shuttle bus incident.
But for anyone who has been to a major golf tournament, traffic is always a complete cluster.
So the golfer probably thought it was the normal chaos and tried to get through it because he's a player and they usually allow them to get through even when access/roads are closed to other people.
Cop got pissed because he thought some rando was trying to get passed
Cop then got pissed because his authority was being challanged.

Golf, the game that has spoiled more good walks than any other in the world. [laugh]

Maybe he can call Andy Beshear and get a "Get Out Of Jail Free" card.

He has professional golfer money because he has earned it the hard way: by hard work and outstanding performance. Unlike other sports, golfers get paid for their own individual efforts. Sheffler won the last two tournaments he played, including the Masters. He has a reputation as being squeaky clean--and for what it matters, his wife had their first child two weeks ago. I have no doubt the chief and mayor were likely involved in getting him to the course on time--a courtesy I doubt either of us would be afforded. That's on them, not him. BTW, he just birdied his first hole.

This. "Assault on a police officer" is any contact. I bet this was a "do you know who I am" situation. Cops always respond poorly to that.
A cop apparently grabbed the door handle of his car and he didn't stop for about ten yards. I'm sure there were plenty of people who told them who he was. I didn't see any hint of disrespect in the ESPN video of him being walked, in cuffs, to a cop car.

So the cop assaulted himself.
As always, who knows. How many times have you seen a cop pummeling someone while yelling "stop resisting." Here is Scottie's statement from shortly before he teed off, and probably written by his agent:
“This morning, I was proceeding as directed by police officers. It was a very chaotic situation, understandably so considering the tragic accident that had occurred earlier, and there was a big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do. I never intended to disregard any of the instructions. I’m hopeful to put this to the side and focus on golf today.

“Of course, all of us involved in the tournament express our deepest sympathies to the family of the man who passed away in the earlier accident this morning. It truly puts everything in perspective.”

WMUR has had a few stories this morning, and this take seems to be fairly accurate. Supposedly some cop went up to one of the journalists and asked him to write down Sheffler's name.

From a guy who watched it happen:

Basically he drove around a cop, missing the instructions of where to drive. Cop went on a power trip and thought he was an action hero, so he jumped on the car.

Scheffler is probably the most straight-edge guy on tour. Always talking about God, how golf is just a game and what's important is how you live your life, etc...

He's the most unlikely/hilarious guy to have something like this happen to.

At every tour event, players are given “courtesy cars.” Usually loaned from a local luxury car dealer. Golfers fly into events and start and finish at very different times and stay at different places, so having a driver for every person is impractical at best. Often caddies will do the driving but sometimes they need to get to the course earlier.

I personally welcome the white collar, country club crowd to the "movement"
On behalf of the white collar, country club crowd (while I do pay five figures for my golf each year, I almost never wore white shirts at my white collar job) thank you. BTW, I’ve been a member of the movement since Kennedy was president.
