The wife and I went away to the Cape this weekend, so I put in an absentee bid on this weekends auction. I had four candidates in mind. An 1899 M98 Krag-Jorgensen, A 1944 Victory revolver in .38 special, an ex-CMP Winchester M1 carbine, and a 1928 M08 Colt in .380. The Krag and the M08 Colt went for $650 each, well below the starting low estimate of $800. I had passed on those two as I thought they would go too high for me. The Victory revolver went for the low estimate of $400.

I wound up with the M1 Winchester for a little more than the high estimate; I had to bump my bid online. Now I finally have my Winchester; I didn't really 'need' another M1 carbine, but I decided that I wanted to keep the matched IBM a safe queen and play with the Winchester when I want some carbine action. I'm also hoping the kid will want to shoot again later and that I should get another one before the prices went into orbit. No issue that it comes without a magazine - I have about 6 extras. I have a spare sling and I thought I had an oiler, but can't find it.

Other auctions:
Two Svt-40's: $900 and $1100
A nice second model Brown Bess (Rev. War time frame) $1300
An 1848 .69 US Springfield smooth bore percussion $750
An 1833 M09 Potsdam .72 musket Percussion conversion $450 (Black powder is really come down lately)
An 1841 15.4mm Dreyse needle fire: $2500
Many '03 and 03A3 Springfields for $650-$800
The Enigma machine went for $50,000
The Johnson auto went for $3250

I assume your prices are the gavel price and does not include the 15-20% buyer's fee? I have been watching a lot of auctions on line fhrough proxibid for a while now and have picked up a few good deals along the way. Most of the stuff gets what it is worth at least. The three I have one was by putting in a really low bid and assuming I will be outbid then walking away. Most of the time I do not win but every once in a while I get a good deal. Glad to hear you got your Winchester M1.

EDIT: Damn I take too long to type. LOL

The price is without the 15% buyer's fee. I culled the list for most of the milsurps. Auctions are another tool available to us collectors.

I got my IBM to the range today in anticipation of the Winchester. All I could think of was the disclaimer on TV mutual funds commercials; "Past performance is not an indicator of future results". The first two times I shot the carbine, no left-handed cases to the head. Today I shot in a new position - seated on the concrete with hasty sling. Of the one 30 and one 15 rounds magazines I shot, half hit me in the head. The cuts were deep enough to bring blood down my forehead. Not having a band-aid (or several) I fothered a couple of bore patches over the hits to stop the bleeding. Note to self; you will wear a hat when shooting a carbine. Just when you thought the carbine was your friend...

I figured that you'd know better. [wink]

I learned my lessons the hard way too. Brass bouncing off overhead landing between my glasses and cheek, landing on a chain on my neck, etc. I always advise all students to wear a ball cap to minimize that problem.
