Yes. Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht was sentenced to two life terms plus 40 years (federal, no parole) for allegations with which he was never even charged. The sole "murder for hire" indictment was a state charge in Maryland that was so faulty, it was dismissed with prejudice.Unproven charges are frequently used as a sentencing enhancement as well.
The Silk Road activity used to convict him happened while TSR was under full control of two corrupt federal agents who were busy stealing all the Bitcoin they could, for themselves.
