Trump gun control, update post 529 Trump No Longer Backing “Red Flag” Law, Background Check Changes

Partnering with the Social Media people that want to subjugate us to China (Google) or to the SJW mob (FaceBook & Twitter) sounds like a great idea.

Big tech is going big on warbots because they know someday the stompy boots might not be willing to turn their arms on their own people. Better to have warbots and copbots to do the stomping the pensioned meat gets second thoughts about.

Giving the tech oligarchs any more power than they already have rather than fragmenting them into competing factions with existing antitrust laws is a bad idea.

I want the slogan "Algorithms are NOT the Answer" to be popularized. We've seen with Youtube if you so much as mention certain words that you'll get flagged and demonetized, if you just show Nazi rallies from the 30s for historical context you're treated like a Neo-Nazi by the AI algorithms.

That said, do we need to try to find a way to act to stop shooting before they happen? Yes, but using AI algorithms is going to create more problems than solutions.

I would be more immediately worried if that title and description was anything other than someone's inference using language that does not appear in the transcript linked to support it.
This clip, title, and description were not created by C-SPAN.

However if they wanted to I am sure the technology already exists, but turning it on American citizens without probable cause would be something a court would never allow right... (FISA, cough, cough, FISA)??

Yes, that’s where the COTUS is indeed outdated. Back when the Government wanted to know what you owned, did and said in the privacy of your own home, the 4thA protected you in your Castle and any mail you sent out without a warrant. Now, most ElectroMagneticField (EMF) that emits from your home is “public” property and searchable w/o a warrant. Government can and does put cameras and sensors outside private property to see in and see what comes out. They are limited in what they can use in a court as evidence but Fruits of an Illegal Search are still admissible if those acting “didn’t know” it was an illegal 4thA search. And WhoTF knows anymore?

First we identify gun owners based on public posts on SM, then we analyze if they pose a potential danger to themselves or others, then we get a warrant for phone records, credit card statements, etc. And the algorithms use race, ethnicity, gender, age, religion, politics, etc., to assess risk profiles - but we can’t use Black, Hispanic, Muslim, etc. as that’s profiling so we’re left with white, males, over 40, Conservative, ...

That C-Span clip and title were user-created. Not something Trump said or the work of C-Span.

"Algorithms to find Gun Owners" is the work of some anonymous anti. President Trump is talking about using online speech to locate mass shooters before they start pulling the trigger. Not quite the same thing.

Yes it's pre-crime. However, preventing mass shootings is one way to prolong the life of 2A.

If you watch the vid he says he wants to work with social media sites to detect mass murderers before they strike

If you watch the vid he says he wants to work with social media sites to detect mass murderers before they strike

Of course he does. Who wouldn’t?

But finding the risky people online isn’t the problem. The problem is what the .gov is allowed to do next. You find them... and SWAT them? Red-flag them preemptively? What?

I don’t want the government doing any of that.

It doesn't take much though for them to use heuristics to flag gun owners via content they post etc. The existence of such automated systems to begin with, just creates an unparalleled potential for abuse..

You are absolutely correct Mike he does say that and my comment is not a criticism of your post which raises a very interesting topic.

I merely noted that the title and description of the article was an extrapolation of what was said and an apparent anonymous one at that.

It is a jump from what the President said to the kind of deployment the author implied.
Keeping in mind that it is a jump I know many anti-gun statists would like to see made.

Trump said background checks were off the table but now he says no he didn't say that

Trump reverses again on gun background checks, says he backs them and never told NRA otherwise

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump reversed himself on firearms restrictions Wednesday, saying he supports background checks one day after saying he didn't want to go down the "slippery slope" of eroding gun owners' rights.

Trump confirmed that he discussed background checks with Wayne LaPierre, head of the National Rifle Association, but he disputed news reports that he told LaPierre that background checks were off the table.

“I have an appetite for background checks,” Trump said from the White House South Lawn as he departed for an event in Louisville, Kentucky. “We’re going to be doing background checks. ... We’re going to be filling in some of the loopholes.”

Trump said he wants to get guns out of the hands of the mentally unstable and said he considers mass shootings a public emergency.

“I want guns to be in the hands of people who are mentally stable,” he said.

Tuesday, Trump backed away from supporting stricter gun measures, saying laws were already "very strong."

"We have very strong background checks right now," he said.

Trump emphasized his staunch support for the Second Amendment.

Tuesday, Trump spoke on the phone with the NRA's LaPierre.

The Atlantic first reported the details of the phone call, followed by The Washington Post and The New York Times.

According to the outlets, Trump told LaPierre that comprehensive background checks for firearm purchases were no longer under consideration and that the White House would advocate for other measures concerning mental health or the prosecution of federal gun crimes.

The NRA confirmed that a call took place, posting a message Tuesday on Twitter from LaPierre that he spoke to the president.

"We discussed the best ways to prevent these types of tragedies. @realDonaldTrump is a strong #2A President and supports our Right to Keep and Bear Arms," LaPierre wrote through the official NRA account.

The NRA has vehemently opposed the imposition of stricter background checks for firearm purchases, but strife at the organization gave gun control advocates hope that stricter measures could be passed.

So? What about the background check we already have?
Are we now going to have a super BGC? Or maybe even
a super super BGC? People don’t know their ass from their
elbow.

It would take an act from congress to allow doctors to release
patient information. Not to mention, not a doctor in the world
will certify anyone to own a gun. Can you imagine the liability?
Do you think Nancy Pelosi is going to want
to have her medical records available for inspection if she wants
to have a firearm? Or Mitch McConnell? I don’t think so!

Wait..you actually think they'd make the law apply to themselves as well???

The funny thing is the shit he's talking about is already happening, LE orgs get grant $$$$ for fusion centers and that bs, and they're already raking faceplant etc for "hits".

It'd be so much better to re open the psychiatric facilities that were closed back in the '70's and just lock up all the nutcases.
So what if their feelings get hurt ?

Cardinal O’Malley calls for leaders to act after ‘unacceptable’ mass shootings - The Boston Globe
“We implore our elected leaders to rise above ideological differences and work together to address the serious issues facing our country by enacting meaningful and effective policies to end the violence,” said O’Malley in the statement. “This includes keeping firearms, particularly assault weapons, out of the hands of those who would use them to inflict devastating harm on our communities.”

The Trump administration is considering a proposal that would use Google, Amazon and Apple to collect data on users who exhibit characteristics of mental illness that could lead to violent behavior, The Washington Post reported Thursday.

The proposal is part of an initiative to create a Health Advanced Research Projects Agency (HARPA), which would be located inside the Health and Human Services Department, the report notes, citing sources inside the administration. The new agency would have a separate budget and the president would be responsible for appointing its director.

HARPA would take after Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or DARPA, which serves as the research arm for the Pentagon. The idea was first crafted in 2017 but has since gotten a renewed push after mass shootings killed 31 people in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, in August.

The Suzanne Wright Foundation approached the president recently and proposed the agency include a project called Stopping Aberrant Fatal Events by Helping Overcome Mental Extremes, or Safe Home, the report notes, citing two people familiar with the matter.

President Donald Trump has a close relationship with Bob Wright, who founded the foundation after his wife died of cancer. Wright was a former chair of NBC and occupied that position while the president hosted “The Apprentice.” (RELATED: 20 People Dead After El Paso Shooting, Governor Says)

HARPA would develop “breakthrough technologies with high specificity and sensitivity for early diagnosis of neuropsychiatric violence,” according to a copy of the proposal. “A multi-modality solution, along with real-time data analytics, is needed to achieve such an accurate diagnosis.”

The document lists several technologies that could be employed to help collect information, including Apple Watches, Amazon Echo and Google Home. Geoffrey Ling, the lead scientific adviser on HARPA, told reporters Thursday the plan would require enormous amounts of data and “scientific rigor.”

He added: “Everybody would be a volunteer. We’re not inventing new science here. We’re analyzing it so we can develop new approaches.” The White House declined to provide the Daily Caller News Foundation with a statement but sources told WaPo that Trump has reacted “very positively” to the proposal — it is unclear if he has seen the Safe Home idea.

Google and Amazon have also not responded to the DCNF’s requests for comment.

Trump said mentally ill people are responsible for the uptick in mass shootings. “I do want people to remember the words ‘mental illness.’ These people are mentally ill. … I think we have to start building institutions again because, you know, if you look at the ’60s and ’70s, so many of these institutions were closed,” he said on Aug. 15. The president has also floatedthe possibility of supporting background checks.

The president has an icy relationship with both Google and Amazon. Trump told his Twitter followers Monday that Google manipulated votes to help former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton ahead of the 2016 presidential election. “My victory was even bigger than thought!” he added. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos has long been a whipping boy for the president.
