BioVault 2.0

BioVault 2.0 is the ultimate solution for gun access control. Licensed by the NRA,
BioVault 2.0 provides safe storage and easily controlled access for handguns, weapons, ammunition, jewelry and other valuable items including: pharmaceuticals, coins, stamps, stocks, bonds, critical data and personal documents.

BioVault 2.0 uses proprietary fingerprint technology to verify identification and permit access. BioVault 2.0 is easily programmable and can store up to 50 authorized fingerprints in its flash memory. Only you decide who gains access to BioVault 2.0. BioVault 2.0 patent-pending technology is the culmination of over 20 years of biometric development. BioVault 2.0 requires no external computer or power to function, no key or card to provide override.

The BioVault 2.0 power management system allows 3 common household D-cell batteries to last up to one year under normal use. An auxiliary AC/DC adapter conveniently plugs into and electrical outlet to provide an alternate source of power. Flash memory retains fingerprint data even during complete battery or electrical failure.

Man, if it's anything like the MA identity check when I buy a gun, I wouldn't want to trust one of these in an emergency. Give me a good old numeric keypad or key any day. Reeks of too much "smart gun"-like technology that will end up malfunctioning at precisely the wrong time.

God forbid you have a real emergency and you have blood on your hands
(just a "for instance", maybe you were attacked with a knife).
How the heck do you get that thing open?

Anyone buy one of these? It is intriguing and they have a video showing how it works on their site. You can get one without the NRA logo on amazon for $329. You can load up to 50 fingerprints so you could do all 10 of your own. They also have a new small one coming out, looks like a nice one for travel. My concern would be how well the fingerprint thing works.

I'm sticking to my Mossberg Lock Box... http://www.outdoorsuperstore.com/product.asp?prod=284064
I wanted one ever since I saw it on display at Richie's in Westport and got a chance to inspect it and tested its strength. I keep my 500 pistol grip in it and a chamois shirt hanging over the whole thing so its concelaed from any quick glances.
I'd trust a turn of a key any day over an electronic gizmo trying to read my finger print.

Keys and mechanical locks are more reliable than fingerprint or other electronic locks that need power. I do not debate that point.
I should have mentioned that I have a 2 year old daughter and hope to have more kids. When I see what my daughter manages to get into now I figure anything with a key is suspect in the future. Kids have almost unlimited time and energy to figure out what they want to do. Anyone remember being a kid? You probably knew everywhere your parents tried to hide stuff.

I used to get along with a "gun locker" from wal-mart and I have a versa-vault (which I don't find too reliable see this post http://northeastshooters.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=20312 ).

I recently bought a real safe, combination only for my long guns and I have the combo in my head, the written copy of the combo is off site. Normally I keep the keys to the versa vault and the gun locker on my person but it is not realistic to think I can do that 100%. The thing I like about the biovault is nothing to remember or carry around but yet guarantees no one unauthorized gets in, it is really just a question of how well it works. I might have to be the first tester around here.

I read Ayoub's book on guns and child safety, I plan on teaching her about guns at a young age and taking her shooting when she is old enough but something like this seems like the perfect product.

Sorry about the digression but that is why I find this safe so interesting. If it was just me or even just my wife and I, I would stick with something simpler.
