I’m interested in picking one of these up, but it seems like there’s a lot of variations. Any advice on where to reasonably read up/watch up without getting lost in the internet?

Not 100% sure. I ended up getting the XL Spectre comp custom - link below (has cuts in the slide), shots very smooth for a subcompact. Also is optic ready. Have also shot the regular P365X and it shoots pretty good as well

I would look at the regular P365XL unless you have a specific interest the custom works variation.
