Syrian military base was just attacked

So what’s the official explanation why Trump unilaterally decided to launch a military attack on a sovereign nation that did absolutely nothing to the US? And is this a fatal misstep for his presidency?

Not really, considering that every president as long as I can remember has had "bombing brown people that didn't do anything to directly threaten the US" as like a checkbox for being a president.

Those other presidents haven’t had a full blown media/deep state/bipartisan coup underway at the time though. Trump can’t afford to lose any of his existing support, but getting more involved in Syria (and against Russia) risks just that. I guess it comes down to how it plays out, if it escalates from here or dies back down.

Syrian army vows to press war, rebels say strikes not enough

Deutsche Welle:
Unlike the president, US military officials said the current wave of strikes were over after just 70 minutes and that any future strikes would depend on whether the Assad regime conducts any future chemical attacks. "Right now this is a one-time shot," Mattis said.

US Joints Chief of Staff Chairman Joseph Dunford said he had not been aware of any response from the Assad regime in terms Syrian air defense.

Russia's Defense Ministry said that none of the strikes in Syria had hit areas near its naval and air bases, though news agencies reported that the Syrian government had responded to the air attack with surface-to-air-missiles. Syrian state television reported that the regime's air defense managed to shoot down around 13 missiles over Damascus..

Statement by President of Russia Vladimir Putin

April 14, 2018
10:35
On April 14, the United States, supported by its allies, launched an airstrike against military and civilian targets in the Syrian Arab Republic. An act of aggression against a sovereign state that is on the frontline in the fight against terrorism was committed without a mandate from the UN Security Council and in violation of the UN Charter and norms and principles of international law.

Just as one year ago, when the Shayrat Airbase in Syria came under attack, the US used as a pretext a staged chemical attack against civilians, this time in Douma, a Damascus suburb. Having visited the site of the would-be chemical attack, Russian military experts did not find any traces of chlorine or any other toxic agent. Not a single local resident was able to confirm that a chemical attack had actually taken place.

The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons dispatched its experts to Syria in order to investigate all the circumstances. However, in a sign of cynical disdain, a group of Western countries decided to take military action without waiting for the results of the investigation.

Russia condemns in the strongest possible terms the attack against Syria, where Russian military personnel are assisting the legitimate government in its counterterrorism efforts.

Through its actions, the US makes the already catastrophic humanitarian situation in Syria even worse and brings suffering to civilians. In fact, the US panders to the terrorists who have been tormenting the Syrian people for seven years, leading to a wave of refugees fleeing this country and the region.

The current escalation around Syria is destructive for the entire system of international relations. History will set things right, and Washington already bears the heavy responsibility for the bloody outrage in Yugoslavia, Iraq and Libya.

Russia will convene an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss the aggressive actions by the US and its allies.

Analysis | The U.S. just bombed 3 sites in Syria. Here’s what we know about why states choose airstrikes.

Trump Is Assembling An Arab Army To Replace US Troops In Syria

The Trump administration is hoping to secure a commitment from a handful of Middle Eastern states to assemble what is effectively an Arab army for a permanent military "stabilizing force" in Syria that would replace the U.S. military deployment in Syria and overthrow Assad/prevent ISIS from regaining lost territory in Syria's battle-ravaged east.

not that i'm glad that this shit is happening, but I'm glad that they're finally learning to keep their damned mouths shut about the whole thing until and after it happens. coming out in the media and saying 'we're going to bomb syria tomorrow at 4:13pm EST' doesn't cut the mustard when munitions can be moved underground or otherwise 'away' in a matter of minutes.

if it were our missiles, I bet it was Mattis' idea to keep the thing under wraps...hell, he probably even wanted to be the one to push the button and watch the satellite feed...I know I would get a half a hard on :D

Saudi Crown Prince tells U.S. Jewish groups that the Palestinians should shut up and stop their whining.
It looks like the sides are being chosen for WW3.

I wonder what side Turkey will be on?
