Alright, I'm man enough to admit it: I can't get a gun back together. I have an old Sears Double barrel 12 guage that was given to me. I made the mistake of disassembling it completely and now I cant get it back together. The problem is that the hammer springs are 100 pound springs and I can't depress them with the hammer in place in order to slide the pin in through the frame.

I've tried vices, C-clamps, you name it. No luck. Anyone have any tips or know of who or where I can send this thing to to get it fixed?

Try using a tapered punch (starting or center) or a rod that's noticeably smaller than the pin holes as a starter pin. If you're getting the hammers close you can come in at an angle and lever the hammers down into alignment then push the pin in from the other side.

Did you try taking it back to Sears? [smile]

But seriously, what's the date or model? A photo would help of course. I'm no expert on Sears but I think most were manuf. by a major brand and relabeled as Sears. So if you can identify who made if for Sears you can probably track down a diagram or possibly contact the manufacturer for repairs or a referral.

I'm in SE MA and I can't take pics. I do know that it is an older model Stevens. I believe it is this one: http://marauder.homestead.com/Stevens311.html

I can figure out from these diagrams and from memory where everything goes, but I just can get the hammer to line up with the hole. When I use C-Clamps to push the hammer in, the hammer goes far enough but it is always too high or too low. When I try to raise or lower it, it slips off of the part that it fits into inside the spring.

Did you read the second paragraph where it says "it's nearly impossible to do without special tools?" (not trying to be a wise-ass here) I wish I knew what those special tools are.

Sounds like you need a second pair of hands or maybe the replacement springs that are supposedly easier to install.

Haha, no I didn't read that paragraph. I didn't find that document until after I foolishly took this thing all apart. But yes, I do need special tools, I do need another pair of hands. Heck, I could use an two extra sets of hands with special tools.
