She's "Gun-free" in Chelsea.... (and deathly afraid)...

did you say she needed to go thru a metal detector each day at work? Tell her to find a better place to work!
Yep.. metal detector, daily upon entrance..."Tell her to find a better place to work"??... OK, but... Most employers in this country aren't exactly handing out jobs that pay 100k, with benefits, vacation, sick, personal, retirement plan (good one too), working summers indoors in air conditioned comfort, winters warmly heated etc etc etc....
My friend's wife, the subject of this post, actually has a better benefit plan than I do and mine is considered phenomenal these days.....Only one, um, "minor issue" is their "Oh, and by the way ma'am, please leave literally everything that even remotely could be considered a self-defense tool or a weapon, in any way shape or form, at home (or else!). Thank you" policy.

Ugh.

Yah,but you said she was hot. But apparently not hot enough to get a job without a metal detector or an escort to her car.

For the sake of argument, let's pretend that it's Sasha [Bridget Regan] from The Last Ship.

Either I missed something important or...
How does that help with the walk from the door at the building to the car? Then how does it help while at the car fumbling with getting it open.
Yeah. In Chelsea, that'll work great... "Por favor, Amigo, give me a few minutes to run over to my car, unlock the trunk, then unlock the" Mass compliant locking container" inside, where I'll retrieve my unloaded gun, load a mag, and I'll return to continue this 'conversation', OK".

Gracias mi amigo. .

Hell, if she's making $100K, tell her to park farther out and call Uber or a cab to bring her to the office and then call them again to pick her up at the door at night, take her to her car and make sure she starts it. Maybe even expense it if she can convince the company it's a safety issue.

100k before taxes isn't exactly "pay for daily Uber rides" money, when you have kidsy, mortgage, etc etc etc.... I make more than that and can barely go out for a nice family dinner once a month... Boston 100k a year = a hell of a lot less than "100k" in actual pocket money.

Uber and cab drivers just love calls that result in a one block ride. Couple of weeks of doing that, and she won't find anyone willing to drive her.

It's a pretty straightforward choice: either the conditions are so bad that she finds a new job or the job is too good and she needs to deal with the employer's policy.

Every time you get in, the meter starts at several dollars. Why wouldn't they want to make $4 in sixty seconds?

Because they have to drive 10 minutes to get the passenger, then wait 5 minutes for her to come out, hypothetically drive her 60 seconds, then wait 2 minutes for her to find her wallet in her purse, count the money 3 times, and calculate the tip. It's 60 seconds for a passenger and 20 minutes for a driver. $4/20 minutes for a cab driver whose overhead is probably $7-$10/hr doesn't look too lucrative.

Dude, do you even Uber? It's all done by CC, no counting. Ever.

That's not how Uber works.

What's the fundamental difference? The driver doesn't have to drive to a pick up location or wait for a passenger? I admit there's no cash counting, so for the Uber driver it's not $4/20 minutes but let's say $2.50 (I think Uber is generally cheaper than a cab) per 15 minutes with Uber taking 10% or whatever they take. Still not a good deal.

Lets get serious here. IF there is a serious fear for her life and safety, she should make a formal complaint to management about the parking conditions. They should be willing to provide and escort/guard to walk female employees, or install a guard at this secondary parking lot, or come up with a "buddy system" where a male co-worker walks female workers to the parking lot at the end of a shift.

She has evidence of sexual harassment from these street thugs, so she should drop THAT word on them. By NOT providing this protection service, they TOO may be guilty of sexual harassment in a very legal way. In other words, if presented to management correctly, the cost of a security guard may seem like small peanuts compared to a serious potential sexual harassment lawsuit that ALL of the women working there might join in on!

If I were her manager at this facility, and five women walked in my office pointing out this unsafe condition, I would want to DO something about it, either just because I was a good manager and wanted happy employees, OR because I feared a personal lawsuit if one of them got hurt after complaining to me.

If she looks like Bridget Regan the ranks of Uber drivers will swell.

SOMETHING would swell, alright.

If the company is put on notice of a serious safety concern and there are reasonable steps they could take and don't, then something "happens", damned skippy they should fear a lawsuit.

If the company is controlling your options for travel or self defense, they share in a responsibility as well. They can excuse themselves from that responsibility by simply saying: "Get here how you choose and take whatever lawful safety measures you deem necessary. Since we don't want you walking around the office with an ar-15 slung from your shoulder, we'll give you a place where you can lock it up once you get here."

some wild ideas here...uber a block to work from a parking garage...yea get to the garage and sit in your car with junkies around and wait till the uber shows up and then the driver has to drive into the garage and actually find your car and be late every day, makes sense...OP said she has a good job so getting another good job in today's market is a little crazy (last in first out)...the best ideas so far are...go to HR and complain (with other female co workers) to get a escort...test the metal detectors with hair spray can and just carry pepper spray put it inside the fake coke can container if necessary or the pen spray...the plastic knife is a good one as well (just say it's a letter opener)...how about something simple, carpool with a coworker?...find another parking garage in a better area and walk a little farther?...there aren't many other resonable options

Maybe it's been discussed over the last 11 pages but has she considered talking to management about it, and escalating the topic until the very tip top CEO/whomever says no? The very least they could do is provide locker room with key/card access to it right before the metal detectors.

If the security is as described then she should be able to get away with lipstick pepper spray at the very least. If it were me I'd start with that and then maybe work my way up to the fake hairspray can once they get used to the beep. If it's just a walk through metal detector it should be easy to beat on a small level and still give her something to work with for self defense.

I wouldn't carry a knife to protect myself against junkies, I don't want them bleeding all over me. I rather use pepper spray and run away. Also if she have a good job why would she quit. She needs to trust her training and be aware of her surroundings.

Question to the OP: She has to walk a metal detector, but what do they do about carried handbags and or laptop bags? Is it an xray or just a hand check?

The reason I ask is if it's just a hand check with a stick from rent-a-cops, they aren't going to GAF about what's in a purse, and you could absolutely get a pocket gun through. Concealed means concealed. They even make purses specifically for the purpose.

sounds like a call to CH 4,5,7 news team would get her all the "help" she needs to get management off their duffs. But only do that after trying inside channels first.

Meanwhile she should request an escort to her vehicle everyday and carry keys in hand ready to stab someone in the eye.

This, we never let the woman walk to their cars after dark alone when I was in Chelmsford. We were right on the Lowell line and there were plenty of dirt bags in the area.

Apparently everyone missed the part when I suggested she park farther out, as in a better 'hood, then get an Uber or a cab. But then we learned it's not possible for someone making $2000 a week whose husband is also working, to spend a little of it on a safe ride out of a scary spot. Better to carry a plastic knife to ward off some street thug or thugs.
The women in that office need to document every incident and then hit up the boss for an escort or a ride, or a new office in a decent part of town.
