hey.. I bought a cheap Pursuit rimfire scope from Bass Pro to mount on my 10/22.
http://www.basspro.com/Pursuit-Rimfire-Rifle-Scope/product/12022405010613/

Trying to figure out how exactly it goes on the rail. I've tried the Ruger rail that came with the rifle, as well as a Weaver brand rail. But both appear to be the same style.

Both bases have a concave rounded side which appears to go over the receiver. That opens up to a wider "dovetail", then there's a narrower very thin area on top. I guess they're called "tip-off bases".
Like this..
http://www.midwayusa.com/product/14...-off-weaver-style-scope-base-ruger-10-22-to-9

I'm not sure what the scope rings that came with the scope are to mount to. Do they clamp onto the wide part of the base (the rings don't open wide enough), or to the narrower top? Or maybe I need new rings? Or option 3, I'm just an idiot? Maybe someone can look at the rings and rail and tell me if 1) i got the pieces that fit together and 2) I'm doing this correctly.

Thanks in advance.

Scope rings should fit the picatinny. And from reading the scopes reviews seems no one has issues. Upload a pic of your setup

Having just been through this in building my son's 10-22, first thing you do is throw away the Ruger supplied rail. It has that raised center part and nothing seems to fit it properly. I went with this rail from midwest industries but you can find cheaper similar items since it costs half as much as the scope. :p

it's a Picatinny.

Search 10/22 scope mounts

yeah.. I heard that the Ruger rail was crap, so I got a Weaver rail for $12 at BPS.. it was basically the same thing.

I think JayMcB has it right.. I have Weaver rails and the scope mount rings are for "tip off rail". I thought they were the same, but the ring mounts are way too narrow.. The scope seems to barely hold on to the top lip. I don't imagine it mounts to the narrow part of the top rail, right?

I think if I return the Weaver rail to BPS and pick up Weaver rings which appear to have a wider base, they will fit on the Ruger rail.

You made me go find my 10/22 parts bin...

Ok, the stock 10/22 rail has both a Weaver profile and a 3/8 dovetail.

It sounds like the scope mounts you have are for 3/8 dovetail. Presumably the mounts will grab the "top" dovetail of the Ruger rail.

You could also buy Weaver or Picatinny rings for the scope which would grab the wider dovetail on the Ruger rail. Be careful though because the Ruger rail sits very close to the receiver and not all rings will clamp without interference. You also have to hope that the slots in the Ruger rail are adequately spaced for the scope. As others have suggested, there are aftermarket rails for the 10/22 which will give you a true Picatinny rail complete with the required clearances.

I just checked... my surplus $10 Weaver scope rings fit the stock Ruger 10/22 rail. They straddle the 3/8 dovetail on the top of the rail and clamp on the wide part of the rail. They are thin enough that they won't have issues with the receiver.

I just looked up something I've always wondered about. Picatinny and Weaver are essentially the same. The only difference is number and spacing of the cross-grooves cut for the mounting ring's screw. So, Weaver and Picatinny rings are interchangeable.

What are the differences between the “Picatinny” and the “Weaver” systems? The profile of the two systems is virtually identical.
Brownells article.

This old thread contains much misinformation about "low-profile" rails.
Coincidentally, I dealt with sightline issues on a 10/22 in late May'18.

Our takedown 10/22 comes with a standard Ruger rail.

I installed the stock rail, to accommodate an insanely cheap aftermarket
TruGlo scope (3-9x, Weaver rings).

The scope mounted fine, but when I removed it,
I realized that the newly installed Ruger rail blocked the iron sight picture.

I spent at least three sessions beating on the Intarwebs
before I found a popular rail that was allegedly 10/22 compatible,
yet thin enough to clear the view for the iron sights.

Shopping was complicated by the fact that the only nearby
brick-and-mortar store that admitted to stocking the rail
was Dick's, which has been Dead To Me ever since
they threw their AR-15 customers under the bus because Sandy Hook.

I found an acceptable workaround.

From a writeup that I sent to a Mass. shop owner at the time:

Symptom:

Installing the stock Ruger-brand, Weaver-standard rail on a Ruger 10/22
Takedown (M/N: 11100) occludes the rear sight's V when the front sight's
bead is visible.

Diagnosis:

The stock rail's 0.24" thickness at centerline is too high to permit
viewing both front and rear sights, which are both mounted on the
(tapered) barrel.

Cure:

The 10/22-compatible Weaver-brand (Weaver-standard) ``Tip Off'' rails
are only 0.16" thick at C/L, and permit use of stock Ruger iron sights
when no scope is mounted. The three models, all of which ostensibly
differ in finish but not dimensions, are:

Weaver TO-9, M/N: 48201
Weaver TO-9M, M/N: 48505
Weaver TO-9S, M/N: 48009

I got my TO-9M at Riley's[*] for $5.25. (After checking dimensions with a
digital caliper at Dick's/Nashua; given Dick's steadfast corporate
support for gun owners, it added greatly to my enjoyment of this fix to
measure a rail at Dick's, and then buy it elsewhere).

ETA: [*] [halfmast]RIP.

Caveat:

Weaver advertises the TO-9 series as 10/22 compatible, and provides the
rails with 6 mounting holes. Incredibly, four holes have identical
inter-hole spacing to Ruger's rail, but different fore-and-aft offset.
So the only orientation and placement which enable use of all four
receiver holes actually causes the rail to protrude 0.24" forward of the
receiver's leading edge.

Some people on the Intarwebs reverse the rail and use only two mounting
holes. This has the dual advantages of not looking subtly wrong, and
moving the rail's leading edge a further 0.52" back out of the line of
sight.

I chose to use all four holes, at the disadvantage of the rail placement
barely clearing the line of sight.

Notes:

The stock rail was indeed installed in the correct orientation -
all 4 machine screws inserted.

The rear sight was indeed erected -
not folded down.

It's no problem to loosen mounting screws secured with blue Loctite -
no heating needed.

It was easy to shift the rings on the entry-level TruGlo 3-9x40 scope to
match the new rail's crosscuts, while obtaining adequate eye relief _and_
ring separation.

I opted for the TO-9M ("matte finish") to minimize glare issues if I'm
ever shooting up-sun.

I chose Weaver's TO-9 product line because the rails are truly thinner
than Ruger's. Those other "iron-sight friendly" rails which I was
able to research online elevate the mounted optics above the receiver,
leaving a sighting groove; yet are apparently no thinner than Ruger's.

I don't claim that non-takedown 10/22's share this flaw. The takedown's
tapered barrel may contribute to the problem.

An alternate solution might be to combine an aftermarket integrated
rail/rear-sight combo, with an elevated front sight. I'm no gunsmith,
and I didn't want to monkey with replacing the dovetail-fit front sight
(if aftermarket replacements even exist for the takedown's front sight).

your 1st rail will take the 3/8 rings which came with your scope and mount to the thin rail on top.
Weaver Rings will fit in the 2 slots.

You probably did yourself a favor ditching the free rings. The scope is cheap enough it does not need help being more shitty by rings that really suck.

since my scope lacks enough elevation for 200 yards im ordering this once I recover from some over budget spending
