I have a cheapo AK47 clone from Century Arms (WASR), and would like to get a scope, mostly for range plinking. Apparently I need a rail kit of some sort as well.

Besides a plethora of scopes available on the market, there also seems to be a few alternative rail mounting schemes (top vs. side?) I'm not sure what is involved with either, though I'm pretty good in the machine shop if it comes to that. I'll probably be doing most of the shooting between 25-100yd, maybe a little more if the firearm has the accuracy.

Any recommendations would be helpful.

Side mounting is the way to go, there's a bit of flex in the top cover that makes mounting a scope on it less than ideal.

Here's a couple of sources for the scope mounts and rails...

Installation instructions...

I recently installed two (side mount rails), on a couple of AK projects I'm working on. Installation is pretty easy... just carefully line up the rail
with the top cover and drill the holes as close to center as possible.

The rails I used didn't come with mounting hardware so I chucked a few tapered head allen screws in my drill press and held a file against the heads until they fit the mount, then backed them up with nuts.

I got a side mount rail and red dot for my SAR1 AK47 and don't really care for the height. I can't see putting a cheek rest or pad on the butt stock because it is after all an AK. They do have lower mounts available now that fit close to the receiver cover but whether or not they'll clear your AK is unkown until you try.
