Range bag recommendations

I don't have a dog in this hunt, but, as bags get bigger, they seem to get exponentially heavier ... just my 2¢
This. That's why I use a range bag for pistols and general range stuff and bring my ammo in a old army ammo can. All in one bag gets too damn heavy

I like the gps tactical. Mine is four years old and gets killed weekly. I only had to repair the corner on the bottom at the seam. The DAA backpack is nice too.

This one is a steal

I have both large and small Midway bags, purchased in 2012. They are excellent and I really abuse the large one carrying gear for Appleseeds. Hard to believe, but the 5.11 bags are slightly better quality (but more money).

4 to 5 pistols? Best bet is a hard pistol case like this:
Amazon product ASIN B00K7LFJN0And use another bag for ammo and other range stuff.
But if you're gonna use a general purpose bag,
be sure there's a D-ring on the bag that you can
secure the zipper pull to with a luggage lock.

That gets you plausible suitability for locked-during-transport.

A purpose-built gun bag without D-ring(s) ought to be a red flag about design quality.

(Need a separate locked container for FOPA, but...)

Thats the drawback I see in the Midway bag posted earlier. The double zipper with the pull cord between looks very convenient but there doenst look like theres any simple way to lock it for Massfags.

Am I the only one who just throws their stuff in a random old rucksack, then brings along locked cases full of guns?

I’ve never thought of actually spending money on a “real” range bag, honestly. Interesting thread.
Every time a company replaces my corporate laptop they send a bag. Works just fine.

It would be difficult to shoot pistol matches with everything chucked into one big bag. Parts and tools, loaded mags, partial and empty mags, ammo, snacks, first aid, etc would be a disaster.

This. And I’m not OCD/anal by any means lol
But to each their own.

Makes sense. I don't shoot competitively, so I don't know that side of it.

I do keep things organized. I've collected a bunch of ammo cans, tupperwares, and Pelican knockoffs over the years; they all go into the rucksack. It's a small ALICE, in case any of you gearhounds wants to pick one up. [wave]

Old rucksack? You are definitely a prospect for a manly tactical gear! [rofl2]

Here is my blend into Antifa chaos bag, don't try to purchase it because it is out of stock already.

i use a boyt range bag...got it as a gift over 30 years ago. used it hard and it still looks good, no rips or tears, has a bunch of zippered pockets, mag holders, secret pockets, damn thing is brilliant. never felt the need to replace it, i'm gonna have it cremated with me so no one else can enjoy it.

I see what you mean.

I hasten to add that locking a pair of zipper pulls on the same track
to each other seems an adequate substitute for a zipper plus D-ring.
It's just that "hatch" deal for the central compartment in that image that seems iffy.

Agreed, thats what Im doing now. I guess you could padlock the cord to the ring for the shoulder strap? Regardless, if they want to f*ck you, they will. If they dont, they wont

I use a UTG All-in-1 Ultimate Range Bag:
Amazon product ASIN B012ZV99H6View: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B012ZV99H6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

But they don’t make them any more. It’s looks to be the same as the Midway Competition Range Bag System (which is out of stock:(). The nice thing about these bags is that they have a smaller removable stage bag/ammo carrier that fits in the large center pocket. While the large center pocket can’t be locked, the side pockets can be.

After my old adidas gym bag tore apart, I got a pretty big 5.11 range bag which is built like a tank.
It looks eerily similar to the Midway bag in AHM’s post 49. So similar that I wonder if they’re both made by the same factory..

I also have this one for tavor. I guess in smaller size it may be ok for handguns. Middle section zipper has rings for a lock.

I have the Midway bag that was mentioned earlier and I have been really impressed with it. It is certainly big, so it is overkill for a quick trip to the range to shoot a box or two. But if you are going to a class or extended range trip I think it is excellent, especially for the price it is now. It can accommodate any amount of ammo (I have laid out a case of 9mm in via the individual boxes.) ears, eyes, small first aid, small tool kit, holsters, mags, etc. It is heavy all loaded out but I have never felt like the bag was about to fail.

The bag itself is not lockable, but I bought this:

which is lockable storage for 3 pistols. It takes up about half the main compartment of the Midway bag but I am still able to accommodate everything I need and then I am just handling one bag as opposed to multiple things, which I will inevitably forget one behind.

I take 2 Packs to range. My 5.11 Rush 24 and one of these rifle bags. Organized and easy. The rifle bags cost me $35 off Ebay and work great, I can fit 2 14.5 Rifles in easy D76BE15B-4B71-4D79-A7D1-8FB42B223BA0.jpeg

For the amount of handguns you’re talking about you definitely need a hard case. My wife got me one of the spendy “tactical” bags and it’s amazing (she liked the whale). It has the locking zippers and more pockets than you can shake a stick at. Would I have paid $85 for it? Probably not. But it’s pretty dang sweet nonetheless.

Explorer range bags. Think I got it on Amazon, or a gear website for under, $50.

I can fit 2 revolvers, & 3 pistols plus ammo, and carry a 6th pistol.
Not something I do regularly, but have done it a couple times when bringing new shooters to experience different calibers.

I just realized that I mightn't have realized what @headednorth was truly referring to
by double-zippers if it weren't for the fact that The Bride has a luggage duffel
with the same "hatch" feature. Except that the two zippers are even bridged by
a plastic handle like a horse harness's bit, attached to the zippers with a pair of rings.

So regardless of the hatch's utility,
it's probably a feature inherited from the generic luggage industry.

Seeing tacticool bags totally covered with PALS webbing
makes me wonder whether any come with integral Picatinny rails. [shocked]

There ought to be some with QD sockets for shoulder straps made like slings.[thumbsup]
Even photographers have figured that out.
