Question about borrowing a gun.

I just picked up my FID card yesterday after waiting almost 5 months for it. My dad want's to loan me his Mossberg 500 so I can do some clays shooting but he lives in North Carolina.

I know it's illegal to do a private sale across state lines, but is it illegal to for him to loan me the gun and I bring it back to MA when I drive up next month? Do I have to do an FA-10 when I bring it back to MA if he loans it to me and I don't own it? Should I just pay for a transfer in North Carolina when I go down to visit? I'd like to avoid the transer fee if I can. Any advice?
