A while back I was looking for a deer rifle and checked out a few Pawn Shop Guns.

No good deals anywhere.

Then the owner of one of the Pawn Shops had a talk with me. He said that I must be new to Pawn Shops as I was trying to negotiate (Talk him down in price).

He said that most of his customers are repeate business and this is the way it works

1) Joe gets his weekly paycheck
2) Joe goes to a Pawn Shop and buys something he likes
3) Joe goes out to the Baroom and drinks and gambles away his paycheck
4) Joe goes back to the Pawn Shop and Pawns his stuff
5) Joe pays the booky
6) Joe works all week and gets his paycheck
7) Joe goes to the Pawn Shop and buys his gun back

8) Repeate cycle.

Anybody find any good deals at pawn shops?
[rolleyes]

Loaning money for guns is a felony in MA. Check MGLs.

This must have happened ~1970 or later, as I recall cruising the pawn shops on Mass Ave in Cambridge in the late 1960s and seeing guns for sale there. One of my co-workers (I was a NU Co-Op) at MIT/Instrumentation Labs (now Draper Labs) bought a long gun at lunch and carried it back to work, leaving it with the guard at the front desk until quitting time. [Don't try this today!]

When I was in Texas the pawn shops sold beer and booze.

When you walked in you would see, wedding rings, spare tires, guns, fishing gear, tools, you name it, anything a guy had in his car when he was drinking they would drag in to get some more booze..

Recently I was at Fort Bragg and the pawn shops have a new gimmick. Big signs are posted every where. BRING IN YOUR CAR TITLE FOR A FAST LOAN.

The parking lots in front of the pawn shops had all sorts of cars for sale.

When the soldiers missed one payment or were even late a day they would hook the car.

Over at smith-wessonforum.com every so often there is a post about someone finding a good gun in a pawnshop. But these seem to be rare. It's probably something you need to check on a regular basis, along with being in a part of the country where it is allowed.

I was up in Maine a couple years back and saw a lot of older but well cared for handguns. It was around the Wiscasset area (making the wife happy by checking out all the antiques!)

Joe sucks. Joe deserves everything he gets.

I've bought a few guns from pawnshops over the years. A Mossberg 500, an old Beretta Featherweight .22, and a S&W Model 10. All were very good deals for lightly to moderately used guns.

Check out Pine Tree Trading & Pawn on Lisbon St. in Lewiston. Marcel always has a large selection of firearms.

Back many years ago I was in Las Vegas. I visited this huge pawnshop and went to look at their gun section. Man what they had. 1st Gen. Colt SAA's buy the dozen, 1911's at giveaway prices the man who worked there asked me if I saw anything I liked (he saw the drool comming from my mouth). I answered yes, but I'm from Mass. He just shook his head and walked away........

You forgot the Check Cashing/Western Union store. Other than that, you've got it nailed.

I love Pawn shops. We know this "Joe" guy is a regular, and like any good business, the Pawn must size up its client. Allot of it is crack cocaine addicted clients, that is a one way ticket. So the $500 gun is only worth $100 to the pawn and $400 to you. So you make out.

Wow I did not know that. I love hitting Pawn shops in other states. I don't know of any one the Cape, but they always have tons of guns in TX and LA. What a really dumb law, or am I missing something? If the Pawn was a FFL, would it be best to get the gun off the street; instead of being in the hands of a poor person with the urge to make a quick buck?

There you go, making sense in the PRM again. Common sense is the next thing to be outlawed, if it hasn't already. This guy, http://xavierthoughts.blogspot.com/ hits the pawn shops in his area on a regular basis. Almost makes me want to move to LA.

I used to have a regular Saturday morning routine in NC: get up early, hit the BK drive through, head to a half dozen pawn shops to see what came in fresh and hope for some mismarked, rare and unfamiliar guns.I got a Kahr 9mm for $200 because the pawn shop owner though it was a Bryco/Jennings/Davis and scored a few WWII bringbacks cheap but you really can't go to them expecting to find bargains or even anything reasonably priced.Think of it more of going to yardsales and put on a decent layer of Sleezeguard beforehand.

I've long thought that a pawn shop would be the only booming business on Martha's Vineyard in the middle of the winter.

#1 & 3 are bad things?

My brother lives in Texas. The pawn shop nearest him is an FFL, He went in to look around and came home with two stripped lowers last week. Then he called me on how to finish them ( lol). I sent him a care package of lpk, an oops kit and all the spare AR build tools I had. I think he had to buy a vise block was all. I asked him why he bought two lowers and he replied everyone told him you can’t build just one.

I got an Arisaka in decent shape (no mum) for $250 a year or two ago. It was tagged at $400 when I walked in.

Thats really the only time I've bothered to go to one. They just aren't on my radar when looking for guns, too many years spent living in MA. I probably should cruise through the ones in the ghetto once in a while.

Pennsylvania has a law that says you can’t secure a loan with a firearm so our pawn shops have to buy outright. You can pawn a long gun though and pawn shops always have more long guns. This makes me think a lot of the inventory comes from pawning. I bought a beautiful old Browning A-Bolt in 30-06 for $350.

You should go more often. There are not just deals on guns (sometimes), but other stuff as well. My son has picked up some nice tools at places in SC. And not in the ghetto, in some nice areas.

Pawn shops in MA suck, they are totally different in the south.

There used to be a pawn shop in Manchester, NH. It was named "Mr. I buy everything." I bought a sword there once and more than a few music CDs. They had a few long guns, and for a while I had my eye on an Astra pistol but it was in 9mm largo. However, the owner was murdered and the new owner didn't last very long before it closed. When I was on trips, I would stop in at pawn shops looking for key-wind pocket watches. I don't recall seeing many firearms.

There was one in Providence back in the 80s, owned by this old Asian guy. He told us that if we didn't see it, come back next week and he will have it. It's where I bought my "car thief kit" Slim Jim, wedges, dent puller and bypass clips. I went in for a good deal on bolt cutters. I still have the Slim Jim.
