I'm not giving MSNBC any clicks, but there have been a number of these articles implying how crazy and insensitive Texas lawmakers must be to do this right after El Paso.
But, they didn't do this right after El Paso. They did it months ago. The Texas legislature only meets for 120 days every other year. They ended their 2019 session on May 27. With the very rare exception of laws that take effect upon signing, all Texas statutes take effect September 1.
Once the governor signed these bills, there was literally no mechanism to stop them from becoming law even if there was the political will to do so.
