Naval Base defends itself from the neighborhood.

I used to go to Gulfport and Biloxi every year for about 5 years on an early spring golf trip with some buddies of mine. Got some crazy deals on super luxury condos and 3 rounds of golf for a week stay. Then the casinos at night for some entertainment. Was it safe? Not really, but it was a cheap trip and lots of fun

[laugh] I work with a guy from Mississippi and asked him, when they opened a location there, if he'd ever transfer back home(our pay rates travel with us so he'd probably be making more than his manager there).

He got all Tracy Morgan about ever stepping foot in that place again, said pretty much the entire state was a shithole.

A late friend grew up and lived in MS his whole life other than when he was in the service.

Back in 2014 when I was planning a trip to help my daughter move to Texas, I asked him about where to stay in overnight in MS. He said that at all costs stay out of Jackson. I had planned on staying at a Holiday Inn Express and he told me that there had been a double homicide in front of there the day before I emailed him. Good enough for me. He advised that Pearl, MS was much nicer and had a lower crime rate. It also had one of the best BBQ places in the south.

He was not wrong on any of that.

BTW, the Johnny Cash/June Carter Cash song "Jackson" is about the one in TN, not MS. I've stayed there and it's not a bad town.

I read that this morning. Gulf Port is not even close to the worst city in MS for violence. Jackson is far, far worse.
And what is the common denominator?

I went through Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama and Mississippi on a trip. Loved Kentucky, Tennessee, and even Alabama. Mississippi was a whole nother world.

Went into a Piggly Wiggly and found barely any fruit, no fresh veges. A request for the nearest Walmart grocery store earned a snotty "Ain't this good enuff fo ya?"

"Jackson Police Department came together Tuesday evening to meet with community members and discuss the capital city’s crime problem." "The agency leaders said they are on a mission to work together as a united front to show the criminal element that they won’t let them take over."

Too late.
