If you had to leave Mass and move north...

Taxes: it's a pretty simple concept. It takes X-amount of money to run a state. That money is going to come from somewhere. No sales tax? Your property taxes will be higher. Or business/Corporate rates will be higher. Somebody is paying for it somewhere.

Precisely yet people don't get the concept. They want all this free stuff that others have to pay for. That's why in the beginning of our country only property owners could vote because they were the ones paying the bills! People were fiscally responsible because they knew they had to pay it back. Look on the feral level the same is going on with all this socialist agenda covid money spending us into oblivion. It's funny when people think someone else is picking up the tab they are all for it, but give the bill and they are like no way am I going to pay for this! Socialism only works as long as you have OTHER peoples money to spend.

Totally agree. And... Some states are more socialist than others:

Yes NH is sales tax friendly but I wouldn't want to pay home taxes.
The whole point of tax vs not tax friendly is the overall taxes you are paying. I'd rather pay a single tax for the most part than get hit with 17 different taxes and tons of fees. MA taxes everything and it adds up to crazy amounts. RE taxes dwarf other places like NH.

No, but you have to consider the totals. My plan, if/when we were to go to NH would be to have enough acreage to put nearly all of it in common use and utilize only enough for the house, maybe a barn, and some yard. That should keep it reasonable, plus no state income tax (9% for me in MA) and no sales tax.

My wife and I moved from CT to NH in late 2018, after retirement. It took a bit to get used to the tax differences, but we prefer it here. Yes, property taxes are high, but no sales tax and no state income tax more than makes up for it.

As far as guns, I'm amazed at how gun friendly this state is. Back in CT, being a gun owner and concealed carrier was like being in the underground. You didn't talk to anyone about it except people who knew the password and secret handshake. Up here, every worker bee who goes into my basement and sees my gun safe wants to start a conversation about "whadaya got?" and "is USCCA worth it?" and "Glock or SIG?" and whatever. We live in a 55+ community, and I know for a fact that more than half the houses in here have guns.

The biggest problem we have is that the state is being turned purple by lefties moving up here, mostly from MA, fleeing the mess they made where they came from, then voting for the same crap once they get here. In 2018, Democrats managed to take over the entire state government, except for the governorship. And of course, being Democrats, they immediately tried to pass several gun control bills and a family leave bill that contained a stealth income tax. Thank God we had Governor Sununu to veto all of those bills.

And in 2020, we found that people in NH really don't want a state income tax, and they don't want anyone messing with their guns. Democrats lost everything at the state level, and Sununu was reelected with 65% of the vote.

I would definitely choose NH over ME again if I had it to do over. It took MA refugees 50 years to destroy Vermont, and hopefully it will take a longer time here.

Refugees from CT are different I assume? ;)

Want to know whats turning NH and every other state blue? Schools and the media. Born and bred NH kids who grow up and become NH voters are a bigger problem than people moving from MA. Most MA liberals see NH as being hillbilly redneck country. Good for a trip to the mountains, a day hike or a ski trip then head back home. The average liberal from Cambridge would rather stick a fork in their eye than move to NH. Also the border towns in SNH where MA refugees are most likely to end up in are consistently red election after election.

Refugees come in all types. Yeah, it is a common presumption that they will change the old ways. However, many seek the new lifestyle and to be around like-minded people.

Folks on NES seem to poo-poo VT. True, the recent gun laws suck and it is no longer as good as NH. However, they still enjoy some pretty strong gun-related freedoms. They have no licensing scheme or scary-gun restrictions (mag limit aside). One can own a suppressor. There are many people I meet in VT who escaped MA & CT and work to keep the culture from changing. Like NH, the complexion of the state house changed this past cycle. The pendulum is swinging back.

Not everyplace in VT is downtown Burlington, Mostly, you can go out on the porch on Sunday morning and shoot. Nobody will complain.

Oh, yeah... taxes in VT are high. Young people fleeing because they are unable to make it.

You want an honest opinion? Pack up head south to Texas. That’s exactly how America should be, they’re the heart of this country. I’m going back as soon as I can.
You go right ahead down to Texas. With their ban on concealed carry while voting, numerous off limits places, licensed open and con carry, 30 06 and 30 07 no gin’s signs, mandatory training, phots and fingerprints for a license. I’ll take New Hampshire any day.

While all true, Texas still has alot going for it. You could certainly pick far worse states than Texas!

NH will be the new MA before you know it, just wait.

Sour grapes much?

We'd have to double our taxes just to start; New Hampshire ranks among the lowest in "Total State Expenditures per Capita"

So that's where it gets interesting -- some states need a lot more money to run, in terms of revenue extraction per resident as well as total state budget.

A state like Connecticut not only has higher tax rates, the per-capita amount of money passing through state and local government is much higher -- it may take X amount of money to run a state like NH, but it takes 2x to run a state like CT (or MA).

Sour grapes??? People from MA have been flooding over to NH for a while now, it's no mystery just open your eyes. If you think the same people leaving won't try to enforce the same bullshit from MA up there you're delusional.

It would be really hard for all those people who live in NH and work in MA to get to work [rofl]
No biggie, everybody is telecommuting these days, Starlink goes right over the wall and the fiber dives under.

We'd have to double our taxes just to start...

The same people who just re-elected Sununu by a major margin, and also gave republicans control over all state government, house/senate/exec. council? Those people are going to convince their neighbors to vote in new taxes and restrictive state laws?

There was a kerfuffle (brouhaha?) in my town recently. A retired gentleman I know wrote an op-ed for the town newsletter about racism in America from a white man's perspective. It was kind of rambling and wonky, but his points were nothing that would be out of place in any mainstream conservative website. He made some observations about the Black Lives Matter organization and Democrat politicians that most of the people on this forum would agree with, but lefties certainly wouldn't, like politicians fomenting racial strife for fundraising purposes.

Well, some woman in town made a huge stink about it. She complained to the town and demanded that the they stop funding the newsletter, and apparently went on social media, and also complained to the Union-Leader. The U-L did a front page story where she openly called this guy a racist (spoiler: he's not). The U-L wrote an editorial a few days later noting that there was nothing racist about that op-ed, and that the whole incident was about the left trying to shut down anyone who disagrees with them. In the meantime, the newsletter has locked down their website, and I'm sure it's because of lefty trolls, likely not even from NH.

Aaaaanyway...the newspaper story identified the woman, so I did some poking, and found that she's originally from another state. Wanna guess which one?

So yeah, they're here and they're trying to enforce the same bullshit. Whether they'll succeed is the real question.

@Pistolay You hit the nail on the head with your last sentence of that. They are there and they are trying to destroy the opposing parties states. The problem is they (the leftists) want everyone to think/do as they do & if you don’t? You’re wrong, racist and a horrible person. I wish we could just segregate them all to California and build a wall to keep them locked in over there. They’re cancer to this country and don’t even like it anyhow.

Actually mass has fewer off limits for concealed carry. And the people from mass who I have met are very pro gun. They are more than welcome here.
You might want to clarify that statement to denote that you're talking about off-limits places in Texas, not New Hampshire.

New Hampshire has one carve-out in state law, Massachusetts has 3 (including nearly anywhere that hints at being a school or airport of any sort, including the waters offshore of Logan.
