Gun Violence report in the hands of DeLeo

The founders had a much more absolute view of home as your castle and personal privacy and security as inviolate. I don't believe for a second they would sanction anything close to what is being called "reasonable" today...
So what do you think the Founders would have considered reasonable exceptions? That word isn't mere surplusage.

This, people do not read things anymore, nor do they feel that language has meaning. The Constitution is a contract, contract law, essentially, applies to it. Every word must be given logical meaning. "Shall not" is pretty clear and so is "unreasonable" and its converse "reasonable." They intended it to mean something otherwise they would have just left it at "shall not."

a friend talked to the lady at GOAL today and she told him that the 1 year misdemeanor language was taken out of the bill.

Is she right? Has anyone heard anything about that?

I've heard rumors too, but "it ain't over until the fat lady sings" should be our motto. Never trust them until it is all over (on August 1st)!!!

Or at least until they publish a revised version. (Not holding my breath.)

Even if they add amendments, Patrick has line item veto and could just cross them out if I'm not mistaken.

We shall see...

Gun owners 'hopeful' after meting with DeLeo

By State House News Service

BOSTON -- The gun owners group lobbying for changes to House Speaker Robert DeLeo's gun violence prevention bill said Tuesday they are seeing "positive results" based on meetings on Beacon Hill, including one with DeLeo.

The Gun Owners' Action League (GOAL) said they were "hopeful" after a "positive" meeting with DeLeo.

"GOAL is seeing positive results from our meetings at the State House and that is a direct result from the thousands of emails and phone calls our members and supporters are making to their legislators," Jim Wallace, executive director of GOAL, said in a statement. "There is a misconception the people in Massachusetts - and especially legislators - don't care about our 2nd Amendment civil rights. GOAL, and its members, are proving that theory wrong."

Gun Owners Action League hopeful about compromise gun control bill following meeting with Speaker Robert DeLeo

BOSTON — The largest gun-rights organization in Massachusetts reported Tuesday morning that it is hopeful about the future of a new gun control bill after its members met to voice concerns over an initial draft with House Speaker Robert DeLeo.

The Gun Owners Action League was among the group of bipartisan dissenters who emerged following DeLeo releasing the comprehensive, 50-point plan in late May.

Viewpoint: State gun lobby group raises hope that a middle ground can be found

Maybe it's because the organization operates in Massachusetts, where even the right wing must gulp hard and accept that liberals hold influence and power.

Maybe it's because the Gun Owners Action League seems to recognize, however reluctantly, the existence of the middle ground, that political terrain rarely visited in the hysterical debate over gun control.

For whatever the reason, GOAL lends an element of hope not just to those who relate to its goal of gun rights, but those who don't. Even as it disputes elements of House Speaker Robert DeLeo's proposed bill on gun legislation, it conveys a refreshing and needed recognition that both sides in this debate have something to say.

Speaking personally, I don't have a lot of sympathy for the gun lobby. They come off as bullies, for one thing, and that gets old in a hurry.

For another, their leaders traditionally refuse to acknowledge the challenge of applying an 18th Century piece of legislation, the Second Amendment, to a vastly changed 21st Century world.

That's not patriotic, it's ridiculous. We constantly re-examine the application of all of our rights, including those protected by the First Amendment.

WTF?

GOAL says that legislators care about our 2a rights? Are freaking kidding me? Get off your knees, stop begging for scraps, and fight. We given to much already. How much more do we have left to give?

GOAL has lost its way. Sorry to the fanboys.

Fifty ! GOAL needs some teeth and they need to start biting

The teeth that a lobbying organization has are given to it by the voters who can be swayed by the aforementioned lobby.

Since GOAL cannot sway enough votes to change the outcome of MA elections, they cannot bite and are reduced to begging.

Anybody who lives (or lived) in MA knows how well that is working for the MA citizens.

Until MA voters kick MA politicians out of their cushy lifetime jobs, nothing will change.

do you know what lobbying is?

you're right, he should stand up there in front of all of them and tell them "MOLON ****ING LABE YOU SOCIALIST SWINE, SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED MOTHER****ERS, We will not comply!"

that'll get the bill stalled for sure

this is 100% true and I don't understand why people on NES don't get this... politicians only care about votes, they don't care about your values, your feelings, the constitution, the laws, forefathers, freedom, guns, tyranny, any of that.

if you don't jeopardize their reelection then they don't hear you

How about you give us details on exactly how GOAL would "fight"? If you were running GOAL, what would your strategy be?

Since gun owners of all types, including Fudds are less than 10% of the population the lawmakers don't care about us. Unless you can throw them out of office they don't care and won't respond.

It is like your kids saying they are going to hold their breath until they get something, how many times have you said "go ahead" or do you immediately say "I will give you want you want" If the threat is not real they will not respond and in this state we don't have a big enough voting block

IIRC, licensed gun owners in MA are ~6% of the adult population. If GOAL actually had all of them as members, they'd be way more effective (the NRA doesn't have that % nationwide). However, they're not even close. GOAL has ~18k members (last I knew) and that's .003% of adults in MA. .003% == we're screwed and people like Serapis can't do the basic math to figure that out.

Looks liek another one on our side.....jsut got this email:

Thank you for contacting me regarding House Bill 4121, An Act Relative to the Reduction of Gun Violence. Please know that although we do need to have regulations in place to protect our communities from irresponsible people, I am not in support of the current language of this bill. This legislation does attempt to address some of our public safety concerns, but I do not believe that by placing more restrictions on lawful gun owners we will be able to prevent firearms from getting into the hands of destructive and harmful individuals. Just a week ago I proudly stood with my colleagues on the front steps of the State House in support of our second amendment right to bear arms.

Thank you once again for contacting me on this important matter and if you have any questions or concerns on this matter or any other, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

Angelo

With a name like Dykema, does that make her a lesbian mother? Good for getting votes though.
