Does it make sense to get a long gun in .223?

Unless the new Walther PPS becomes available in MA my next gun purchase will be a long gun. I am considering something in .223 since I already use that ammo for my AR. Does it make sense to go with that caliber or should I look at something larger like a .308?

Depends on what you plan on using it for. Generally I like to keep the amounts of calibers I have floating around to a minimum, but realistically that's just not going to happen.

If there are survivalist implications in your selection of a longarm, then .223 would not necessarily be a bad choice, but I would probably opt for the .308 for no other reason than it can offer more versatility, especially as a hunting round and if societal breakdown happens in the near future it is a superb anti-personnel round as well.

If you are shooting more for your pleasure, then I think the .223 is easier to shoot, especially if you are relatively new to center fire cartridge rifle shooting.
