It's an old Freudian concept. He equated guns with penises, sort of.

People do it nowadays because people used to learn about Freud, and modern folks have heard the concept from their parents and grandparents. Then their use of the word "compensating" shows you they think they know their Adler, too. They're taking both of them out of context, though only by a little bit.

TL;DR: it's people who think they know psychology, but don't really.
