Chicago police officer dies after being shot multiple times

CHICAGO POLICE OFFICER SHOT DEAD: Police confirm Commander Bauer shot multiple times this afternoon. Chasing a suspect across from City Hall.

Bauer, 53, had spotted a man matching the radio description of an armed suspect when he "engaged in an armed physical confrontation," around 2 p.m., Johnson said.

That’s sucks. I’m no LEO specialist, but is a commander usually policing the streets every day or is it an appointed/elected position?

Here’s what we know now about the shooting of Chicago police Cmdr. Paul Bauer:

  • Bauer, 53, of the Near North District, was shot several times at the Thompson Center in the Chicago Loop a little before 2 p.m. Tuesday and was killed.
  • A suspect is in custody but has not been publicly named, and no charges have been filed.
  • Police said Bauer was shot after a man started running from tactical officers who had tried to stop him for questioning. After officers radioed a description of the suspect, Bauer, at the Thompson Center for a training session, confronted the person and was shot.
  • Witnesses described the chaotic scene, in one of the most populous areas of the city, saying they heard shots fired, saw people running and saw the man being cornered by police before being arrested.
  • Bauer, a longtime officer who once led the mounted patrol police unit, had spoken critically in recent months about what he saw as a “high bar to prosecution” for career criminals, whom he said were too often released on insufficient bonds.

Interesting that suspect not named.....undocumented worker just turning his life around?

Chicago Police Cmdr. Paul Bauer fatally shot by felon in body armor

The man suspected of killing an off-duty Chicago Police commander Tuesday in the Thompson Center was wearing body armor and has a long felony record, including a conviction for armed robbery, according to court records and police sources.

The 44-year-old suspect’s felony record goes back to 1998, when he was charged with armed robbery. He was convicted and sentenced to 16 years in prison.

In 2007, the man was charged with being a felon in possession of body armor, possession of a defaced firearm and possession of heroin. He got three years in prison on the gun charge, records show.

In 2011, he was charged with resisting an officer and battery. He was convicted of battery and given 30 days of community service, records show.

Finally, the suspect was convicted of drug possession in 2014 and received a two-year prison term.

The Sun-Times isn’t naming the man, who lives on the South Side, because he isn’t charged in Bauer’s death.

They don't need gun control they need Criminal Punishment. Treat him like the piece of crap he really is!

Let me get this straight, cops apprehend a guy who has a gun and has already killed a cop, but flash your high beams at a cop traveling in the opposite direction of you and end up dead, or call 911 and die, or crawl on your knees in a hotel hallway and die. Seems unpossible.

The way the article was written, it leaves open the possibility that the other police shot the officer. Or else just very poor writing skills.

But the liberal' s are afraid of us carrying across State lines. Like they say, liberalism is a disease, it rots the brain from the inside out. I'm sure the suspect was a multiple violent crime offender busted many times for having an illegal gun. Remember the cops are RACISTS!

"On Tuesday, Bauer was fatally shot in the Loop by a four-time felon who had drawn the suspicion of tactical teams in the busy downtown area, police said. Officers tried to stop the man a few blocks from the Thompson Center, but he took off running, according to radio traffic of the incident."Though the suspect had a lengthy record of interaction with police, he had not been arrested by Chicago police since 2014, and each of his felony arrests resulted in prison sentences, according to public records."

Career Criminal Charged In Murder Of Chicago Police Commander Paul Bauer

Shomari Legghette, 44, was charged with first-degree murder, aggravated use of a weapon and drug possession. He has prior convictions for armed robbery and multiple arrests for drugs.

Chicago Police Supt. Eddie Johnson said at a news conference that Bauer was “executed.”
Bauer was unable to fire his weapon during a struggle with Legghette in the stairwell, police said.

Bauer had spotted Legghette after he heard police radio traffic from tactical officers who were chasing him through the Loop. Legghette matched the description of a suspect running in a long, fur-lined coat, police said.

The officers wanted to talk to Legghette about a shooting on Lower Wacker Drive on Friday afternoon. Someone in a car had fired at a car traveling in the opposite direction, but no one was hit.

Police said they don’t know whether Legghette was involved in that incident, but wanted to see if he knew anything about it.
