I was thinking the same thing. I hope the filthy little lurking anti's in the background were paying attention...
Agreed.... we all know gun control is futile, and this is one of the
starkest reasons why.
I don't even think people in the US would have to resort to this, though.
If guns were "banned" here, IMO the friendly local "pharmaceutical import
person" likely will have (some imported firearm) for sale alongside the bag of
weed or whatever it is that they will be selling. The only reason that
guns aren't already coming in from foreign countries is because the
profit/weight ratio is far better with drugs. A gun that weighs 1KG might
be worth a few hundred bucks... a KG of (some drug) on the other hand, is
probably worth a lot more. As the drug market saturates they may resort
to product diversification, however. If there are willing buyers generally
a seller will appear to fill the demand.
Not to mention that feds or whoever trying to seize and account for
(200 million +?) firearms in private hands would be a task not easily
accomplished. A lot would end up in plastic tubes or even just
attics and crawlspaces.
Further, it has been proven time and time again, that even in the most
anti nations (great britain, japan, china) that they can't completely
eradicate people having guns, no matter how stiff the laws are...
I think the only reason chechens, afgans, pakis, etc, resort to building their
own guns is because of the $$$$ problems in those places... as well as the
existence of a high local demand for any weapons. I'd place a fair wager
a lot of that stuff was made and traded/sold to someone else for
something.
Could it happen here? Yeah, under some circumstances... especially
in, say, a post-SHTF type existence. While the number of skilled laborers
is probably on the decline there are still a lot of people out there capable
of "fashioning a firearm in their basement" at a minimum.
