Know there has been a thread on here before, but i can't find it at the moment. Girlfriend recently moved to Brighton. Took her LTC class over the summer and didn't apply before moving. Recently had her car broken into and wants to carry pepper spray on her commute to and from school. Having her apply for FID right now since there really isn't a chance of getting anything but a resticted LTC in Brighton. Anyone had any experience with BU PD and pepper spray?

pepper spray is defined as ammunition in this shitehole state, so I would think that whatever restrictions are on ammunition aplso apply to pepper spray (but IANAL).

BUPD is not a licensing entity...that being said...have her sign up for a woman's self defense class with bupd and they give out pepper spray at the end of the class

Exactly

No Sh!t! This is great!

Best solution: Take a BFS, apply for an LTC/A, take the BU course. If they give out pepper spray carry it in accordance with the documented guidance provided int he course.

I understand BUPD is not a licensing agency its through Boston PD. She has her application filled out to be dropped off Monday. But from what i've gathered even with FID pepper spray is still considered ammunition in the Republic of Massachusetts you need the permission of BUPD to carry it on their campus. I believe LENS has first hand info on this. Can't see BUPD handing out pepper spray without an FID.

asold21 - you're correct on all points. I'd hope the BUPD wouldn't give her any crap about pepper spray. I'm willing to bet they're carrying high-cap mags which worse than carrying mace on school grounds.

Concealed is concealed. It's none of their business if she has it on or off campus.

Why would you apply for something that costs the same but allows less? Even a restricted LTC is better than an FID by far.

Whether BUPD will allow her to carry pepper spray depends on whether they've been granted the authority to grant students that privilege.

ETA: never mind, I misread one of the replies.

Hopefully she'll be living with me outside the city in a year and can apply then. Thus, not have to go to Boston PD's "qualification" and all the BS with applying in the city. She's not comfortable with a gun yet although i'd love to let her carry my LCP. I'm sure when i wake up there will be plenty of posts to read. Be safe.

If I recall correctly, LenS said that it is BU's policy to prosecute students caught with OC spray on campus.

Wrong, I've never identified publicly which college it is that takes this position . . . so I never said that it was BU.

IF BUPD is issuing OC, this is a good thing (for licensed individuals) and implies permission from the administration to carry it on campus . . . unless they tell the coeds otherwise.

BTW, if she isn't 21 yo but was a MA Resident prior to attending college, she can't get an LTC (by law) and would have to get an FID. At that point she'd have two options:

- Get FID-D, restricted to OC/Mace only for $25 and no training course required.

- Get FID-C, standard FID good for low-cap long guns and OC/Mace, cost $100 and requires training course.

FIDs are NOT discretionary, so suitability is not an issue per MGLs. That said, I have no idea if Boston abuses this like the range test qualification for LTCs.

Thanks LENS... She's 24. Graduate student at Boston Medical School Campus, but lives in Brighton. Apparently this isn't a localized issue. Just looked at the news and saw that there was a fatal shooting off campus at the college my father works at in NJ. So lets see 2 stabbed in Boston, 1 shot in NJ, and i'm sure i missed something somewhere else in the US. So much for gun free areas being safe. Seems like the country is going down the tubes if you ask me.

BTW.Got to love the comments on www.thebostonchannel.com by the genius major "Boston Mayor Tom Menino said much of the violence can be traced back to guns. He’s looking to increase the penalty for gun crimes.

“One of the issues we have to stop and talk about is the availability of guns,” said Menino. “Where are these people getting these guns and why do we have such lenient policies in America.”

Even to those without FID's?

Can't see BUPD handing out pepper spray without an FID.

A few years back, a serial killer was running around Central Mass. lopping the heads off of hookers. At first they didn't know it was all hookers, and they thought he was just going around killing young women in general. A few PD's in the area were giving out pepper spray, one had a box in the lobby of the station left unattended, no questions asked, any female could take some.

Yes it happens, but if I had a loved one in Mass. who wanted to defend themselves, I wouldn't let them carry OC without a permit because some random cop handed them a can and said it was OK. Getting a conviction for it is a lifetime LTC DQ in Mass.

Whether BUPD will allow her to carry pepper spray depends on whether they've been granted the authority to grant students that privilege.

Exactly.

This was my thinking exactly.

Thanks LENS... She's 24. Graduate student at Boston Medical School Campus,
In that case she really does need to be carrying something. Even I think that's a crappy area.

Ah, BU Med! That's a horse of a different kind! That's been a seedy area ever since I can remember. As a NU student back in the late 1960s I remember a female classmate who decided to "walk to Boston City Hospital" (that's what it was called back then) . . . she got picked up by Boston PD and lectured never to walk down that way again!

As for my "association" with BU Med . . . a year or two ago I had to serve some papers to a PhD medical researcher there and thus I coordinated with the Chief of BU Med Police and ended up escorted by one of his Lts. They secure the buildings (to a point) but the entire area is sketchy and not a place I'd feel comfortable wandering around after dark (there is TTBOMK still a methadone clinic on Mass Ave there and many of their "customers" appear to live on the streets and back alleys there.

As for Mumbles Menino's brilliant diatribes . . . I took the liberty of fixing it for him! [rofl]
