I don't know about NE, but here in Tidewater VA you can't even start thinking about snow until mid December.

Late October here in Central NH (just across the border from Southern VT).

Being from HI, you are probably used to expenses, so VT won't be a shock. Very high property taxes, snow tires (yeah, you'll need them), heating oil, high electric bills, etc. Gun freedoms are nice, but living in NE gives truth to the adage "Freedom isn't free".
