You can easily and safely drop the hammer of a lower without an upper and without an expensive "Dry fire Device". Just cut about a half inch wide piece of automotive heater hose (I use one inch diameter), then make a cut in the little "doughnut' you have made so it is not a complete circle. Slip the open end over the divider between the trigger group area and the mag well in the lower. The rubber hose will cushion the impact of the hammer on the frame and bolt catch. I use this trick whenever I do an AR trigger job.
