I've got one more AR which is in the process of being built up, and since I've got 223/5.56 pretty well covered, I've been looking at alternate calibers. Being in MA, the biggest issue as I see it is magazine availability for anything greater than 10 rounds. The extra effort of getting into 6.8 SPC or 6.5 Grendel so I can buy low capacity mags just doesn't appeal to me.
So, I ran across several references to the 6x45 wildcat, which is the 223 case necked out to 6mm, same OAL as 223, so it will fit unmodifed 20/30 round 223 magazines. Not as much case volume as the other two, so the ballistics aren't really up to what the other 2 can do. The longest range I can get to regularly is limited to 300 yards, so I don't see it as much of an issue. If I'm going to try going past 300, I'm using a bolt action, anyway.
So, has anyone tried the 6x45, reloaded it, talked to someone who did, or have any other cartridge suggestions? I have thought about the 458 SOCOM as an option, although it's headed in a completely different direction than the 6.Xs.
