I've got one more AR which is in the process of being built up, and since I've got 223/5.56 pretty well covered, I've been looking at alternate calibers. Being in MA, the biggest issue as I see it is magazine availability for anything greater than 10 rounds. The extra effort of getting into 6.8 SPC or 6.5 Grendel so I can buy low capacity mags just doesn't appeal to me.

So, I ran across several references to the 6x45 wildcat, which is the 223 case necked out to 6mm, same OAL as 223, so it will fit unmodifed 20/30 round 223 magazines. Not as much case volume as the other two, so the ballistics aren't really up to what the other 2 can do. The longest range I can get to regularly is limited to 300 yards, so I don't see it as much of an issue. If I'm going to try going past 300, I'm using a bolt action, anyway.

So, has anyone tried the 6x45, reloaded it, talked to someone who did, or have any other cartridge suggestions? I have thought about the 458 SOCOM as an option, although it's headed in a completely different direction than the 6.Xs.

I have a 6x45 upper. It's a very simple semiwildcat to play with. With mag length ammo, 70 grain bullets are best, not intruding into the powder capacity. Sierra 70 Match Kings gave me 2900 fps with H335. It wasn't a particularly hot load either. Nosler has a 70 grain Ballistic Tip now, with should be an excellent choice for it. I built it for plate shoots. It takes the steel over extremely well. It would probably be the ticket for rifle pin shoots too.

Thanks, Dan. It's good to know that someone has actually tried it. Those are some respectable velocities, too. Who did you get the barrel from?

The Whispers do look good.....

I'm thinking bullet from 6mm to 7mm, on the 223 or 221 case. 223 brass would be easier to find as a parent case, of course. Those specs should work with unmodified 5.56 mags, as well.

Anything from this list would work well, really...
