just got an email from the state that application are being aceppted for the 2006 Maine Moose hunt. they are also raffling off a 1957 Dodge pickup painted like a state warden truc from that era.

here's the text ----------

The deadline for the application is 11:59 p.m. April 3, 2006. Be sure to
visit our main web site at http://www.mefishwildlife.com for other online permit applications as they become available later this year. Also, please remember that you can buy your license on line at https://www.informe.org/moses/ .

We also wanted you to be aware that we will be giving away a Classic .57
Dodge Warden Truck to one of our lucky on-line customers this year! All you have to do is buy your 2006 license on-line or at one of our 120 MOSES
agents throughout the state and you will be automatically entered into the
drawing for the truck. In addition, applying for a Moose or Any-Deer permit on-line in 2006 will also get you automatically entered into the drawing.

Just outta sheer curiousity, what caliber rifle would be the minumum required for a Moose hunt?...Also, what would be the preferred, or best? At a guess, a .30-06 would be a good caliber. Any wisdom out there to be shared?

A 308 Win is too small. A 30-06 or 7.62x54R Russian are about the minimum that should be used. I'd recommend a 300 Mag or 8mm/338 Mag. A 350 Rem Mag would be good as well.

Of course, it depends on the size of the moose as well. The 308 works in VT, but moose in ME get bigger than ours.

I started it because I was wondering the very same thing... and for the same reason - I was thinking about maybe doing a Maine moose hunt.

I digress.....

A .308 Win. will do. As will a .30/30. Of course with the right shot.

I've seen bull moose get lost after benig hit with a .375 H&H. Bad shots are bad shots.

A .30/06 is just fine. Use 220gr. Core-Lokts and you can't go wrong at the right range.

Just be smart about it........shoot them on the road. :D
