1911 questions

is there anything i should look for in a 1911 ? do they need any modifications if bought new ? whats the difference between say the s&w 1911, and the s&w 1911pd ? any other input would be helpfull.
 
The darker the gun the faster the bullets go. That, and the board consensus is that 9milimeter is the optimal bear cartridge. I'd say that covers it. Oh, and they are four rules to memorize too. They are:

1. Always shoot where you're looking
2. Never shoot something you aren't willing to destroy
3. Make sure your backstop is downrange
4. All loaded guns have bullets in them all the time
