The M16, which is what he ends up discussing, IS an assault rifle. Later on, writing about the Barrett, he gives a pretty good definition of "assault weapon."

The M16 has to be one of the least manliest firearms. Nothing against it. It just doesn't strike me as manly. How bout a 12 guage sawed off coach gun or something. That's manly.

That's just off the top of my head
