Democrats ‘Still Don’t Get It’ on Guns
Wednesday, August 13, 2008
By Susan Jones, Senior Editor

(CNSNews.com) - Beware of what the Democrats are saying about guns in their party platform, a Second Amendment group says.

The draft 2008 Democratic National Platform includes the “Utopian fantasy that gun control laws will somehow make neighborhoods safer,” said the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms.

“While promising to preserve our Second Amendment rights, the party platform demonizes semiautomatic sport utility rifles and wants them banned, calls for anti-gun show legislation and proposes so-called ‘common-sense’ gun laws,” said CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb.

“Boiled down, all it really means is that the Democrats are still the party of gun control no matter how they try to re-package the rhetoric.”

The Draft 2008 Democratic National Platform includes the following single paragraph on firearms:

We recognize that the right to bear arms is an important part of the American tradition, and we will preserve Americans’ continued Second Amendment right to own and use firearms. We believe that the right to own firearms is subject to reasonable regulation, but we know that what works in Chicago may not work in Cheyenne. We can work together to enact and enforce common-sense laws and improvements, like closing the gun show loophole, improving our background check system and reinstating the assault weapons ban, so that guns do not fall into the hands of terrorists or criminals. Acting responsibly and with respect for differing views on this issue, we can both protect the constitutional right to bear arms and keep our communities and our children safe.

In their party platform, Democrats are “shamelessly telling American gun owners that they embrace the rights of millions of shooters, hunters and gun collectors,” but that isn’t true, Gottlieb said.

Democrats believe most gun bans are “common sense.” In their platform, they are calling for a ban on so-called “assault weapons,” and they want to “regulate gun shows out of business.”

Gottlieb says the semi-automatic weapons ban signed into law by then-President Bill Clinton “accomplished nothing” except to cost Democrats control of Congress in 1994.

And he noted that a study done for the Justice Department found that gun shows are rarely the source of firearms used by criminals.

“As Democrats descend on Denver to nominate a candidate who is on record in opposition to sensible concealed carry laws, we encourage gun owners across the country, and especially in Colorado, to remind the party that the Supreme Court in June held that gun bans are unconstitutional.

“Democrats have an opportunity to reject and repudiate this platform,” Gottlieb concluded. “If they do not, that tells American gun owners everything they need to know about Democrats as November approaches.”

I'll say it again --

Gun Control is in the leftist's DNA. They'd be unable to stay away from the subject, even if their children's lives depended on it.

Absolutely. Gun control is more about control than it is about guns, and control is what lefties are all about.

Yeah, and the rigidly RIGHTeous who want to dictate the terms of not only your mortal life, but the life after are not after control... Control is not a party affiliation, it is a characteristic of people who seek power.

Alright, once and for all, if gun shows "are rarely the source of firearms used by criminals", then what is the primary source or sources of guns used by criminals?? Why is this information NEVER available??

The only way you can make a democrap (or some demicans for that matter) stay away from gun control is to punch them in the nose politically; and make it hurt every time you do it. That's the only thing that seems to have any real effect- make the subject too politically costly. This is why you rarely see a non-moonbat district pol supporting gun control openly.

I think its a "Follow the MONEY" issue. Yeah the hard core Dems are always up for a little gun control, but the Dems in many areas of the Country still remember their defeat in 2001. Its the "powers to be" funding the DEM party that are demanding the party continue with this nonsense. Its also coming from the small(But very vocal) "ultra liberal" segments of the party demanding this type of legislation.

Problem is that many people who have multiple voting issues, are willing to vote DEM even when their 2nd A rights are in question!

It will take a couple of big losses to make the the majority of the party tell the true "Anti's" that they will not allow the whole party to lose because of their opposition to the 2nd Amendment! [thinking]

The extreme right is after control just as much as the left. The difference is that the right makes the highly questionable assumption that the people who own guns are on their side, and thus don't feel any need to push for gun control. The left, however, realizes that gun owners tend not to support their view of the world. In reality. most gun owners just want both flavors of fruit loops to go away and leave them alone.

Very well stated sir.

semiautomatic sport utility rifles
Sport utility rifles.

Gotta love that phrase. Actually, I like it a lot better than "assault weapon", come to think of it. Although EBR has it's own non-politically-correct cachet to it.

You nailed it right there.

I always wondered the same thing. Every time the news reports a shooting, I wonder how the gun exchanged hands to get to that point. I imagine most guns are (1) recently stolen from lawful owners and (2) obtained through straw purchases
