Hello All,

I am new to the forum as of recent and figured I would jump right in and get some ideas floating around for a new project I recently started. For those of you that don't know, I am a college student right now and am patiently waiting for my LTC at this time. I wanted a place at the house (aside from the kitchen table) to work on the shotguns and rifles and hopefully build up a few guns in the future. My dad goes on a trip to Florida every year to golf for a week and this year I decided I would clean/redo his workshop while he was gone. Partly because he needs the shop to be done over and partly so I can find myself a nice area to work in [wink]. I took pictures of the shop today and you can see everything he has in there. The benches are staying put but aside from that I am open to idea on how to set up the shop. I am sure a few of you have nice work areas at your own houses so lets hear what you think works best. I had the idea to utilize the space underneath the bench to store toolboxes, drills, hand saws, routers, etc. I was also thinking about buying a Craftsman 5 drawer organizer to put all the screwdrivers, wrenches, etc in. Lets get some ideas going!

PS - The pictures are a side by side of the workshop. I am standing against a garage door looking at the shop so you can almost imagine the two pictures side by side and that is the whole shop.

I'm afraid I can't offer much. The pictures are pretty limiting (taken of the short end of long benches). It would be better to have 'face on' shots of the long wall spaces.

The only general thought is to try to consolidate all the woodworking stuff on one side (probably the longest). To get started, you shouldn't need much lateral space, as long as you have vertical storage space above and below a modest section of bench.

A Crafstmen chest is always a good idea for consolidating a mess of hand tools.

Thanks for the responses everyone! The cleaning will begin this week I hope. I will try and snap a few more pictures while I am there but I am agreeing with you Titan thinking that the woodworking should be kept to the long bench and the opposite wall and the back wall should be made to gunsmith/reload. I will organize the space underneath the benches for storage which should help to consolidate everything I hope. Would you suggest the taller floor model or a smaller, compact model of craftsman storage chests?

I use the floor standing model that comes to about my waist. You can always add another unit on top if you need more space.

The ball bearing draw slides are definitely worth getting. The volume of your tools and your budget are the only real limiters when it comes to a good tool chest. I've even seen some with stereos and small refrigerators built in.

FIRST UPDATE!

Well turns out the project is starting earlier than I thought so I got a chance to go home yesterday and spent a few hours cleaning the place. Some things I can not clean until my dad is back to help decide what to keep and what to get rid of but in the meantime I can do a lot. I found the other bench that was against the back wall although I don't think I have ever seen the bench [wink]. I hope to re-organize the cork board against the back wall and figure out a new way to organize all the nails and screws. I want to clear the wall above the band saw and planar. Anybody have a good system to do so? I think I made a good start for one day and hope to have a few more updates this week.
