What was Pre-Madness Pricing for Ammo?

A new shooter buys what, 50 rounds here and there? I don't see that's much of a factor.

New shooters also suck for, and pay stupid prices for ammo, all the time. (which reinforces vendors to keep the shit price up). They're also more likely to shoot more often when they start out, etc. Prices aside, my ammo consumption was a lot higher when I started than it is now.

I didn't shoot for about 10 years, but I still had a brick of Winchester SuperX .22 from Powderhorn that I bought that was $11/500. Must of been late 90's

Funny thing about that too is that was probably a RAPE price back then, too. [rofl] Not unexpected given that shop.

Seem to recall back in the 80's, maybe around $5 or $6 for a brick.

Had a brick of 10x50rnds America Eagle from Four Seasons that was marked $14.95 and 11/99.

Was just in northeast PA this past weekend and got 6 bricks of 500rnds loose Remington Thunderbolt for $35 ea.
I was on my bike or would have maybe grabbed a few more. They had the 10x50 bricks of it for $5 more

Funny thing is some of those prices are actually high, must've been a peak because of ban scares or something. In 2004 I remember I could get cases of Golden Tiger 7.62 x 39 for like $79. Like a retard I didn't buy tons of them.

I'd be interested to know what the (true) inflation-adjusted price difference between now and then. In other words, how much of the increase has been due to hysteria and how much is just the dollar getting more worthless.

Yup, I thought they looked high too. Probably because of the 94 AWB, maybe partially because of the Norinco ban. I still have a little bit of cheap 7.62x39 left... if only I had known what a good buy it was then

Not to mention that there are more people now than there were in 1994, so you would expect certain commodity costs to rise as they get (comparatively) rarer.

In the early '60s, a box of .22LR was about .50

They are not the cause of high prices..

The cause of high prices are due to the anount of new shooters that happens before and after each election. Those new shooters buy everything at inflated prices, so the retailer charges more and more until people stop buying it.

The ONLY reason 22 is so expensive right now is because idiots are buying it at those high prices.Idiots stop paying those prices, they will go down in price..

What if "idiots" are the new normal?

I had a guy tell me recently that he paid $100 American Dollars for 500 rounds of .22 LR.... and was excited about it. I had to tell him that I paid $20 something for the same box earlier in the year.

people were getting desperate and just would buy whatever they could find. i ran into 2 people at Walmart on different occasions that bought 22 and didnt own a 22 because they knew they could double their money.
I was pretty lucky finding 22 for quite a while and sold some to members here for what I paid for it or traded one brand for another. The bulk 22 lately has been crap with the exception of Remington and CCI.

I'll have to take a look at what I have. I might like to shed some bulk ammo in trade for some minimags. I haven't looked much recently but I'm still not seeing minimags at my local Dicks or WMT.

I scored some a while back. I know some people love them so they are good trade items

Since it's the UK, they probably have an amazing tax figured in to it.

I'm sure they do. Another example: a 20 rd box of 150gr 30-06 had a price of £37 which is about $60. That's $3 per round. Insanity knows no boundaries.

Oh, BTW, this is my last post. It has been "interesting".

Later...

I knew that keeping all these ammo receipts would come in handy one day!
Since the mid 1990s, I collected a lot of rifles from all over the world and had to keep up with 25 different calibers at the end. These prices are only some of what I paid from 2000 on. While I'm happy with myself to have collected enough ammo to support my shooting hobby for the foreseeable future, I always have that nagging feeling that I didn't buy enough. At least today I'm not paying the crazy inflated prices they're demanding.

In 2010 1260 rounds of Yugo 7.62 x 39 for .19 a pop.
In 2006 300 rounds of Guatemalan .223/55 grain for $89. or .29 a pop
In 2006 880 rounds of Russian 7.62 x 54R from Sportman's Guide for $89 or .10 a round.

Here's one that'll bring tears to your eyes:

In 2005 980 rounds of 7.62 x 51 (.308) South African Surplus/brass/lead core fmj from Aim(excellent ammo) for $149 or... .15 a round!
In 2005 1000 round crate of Santa Barbara 7.62 x .51 (.308) from Dan's for .15 a pop
In 2005 1000 round crate of PMC .223 from Southern Ammo for $105 or .10 a pop.
In 2004 50 boxes (20 rds/bx) of XM193 Federal .223 for $3.35 box/ .15 a pop.
In 2004 320 rounds of Brit .303 for $60/ .19 a round from Sportmen's Guide
In 2003 1200 rounds of Cheetah (Zimbabwe Defense Industries) 7.62 x 39 for $151 or .13 a round. Some of the best ammo of it's kind I ever used (still have some)
In 2003 400 rounds of 30.06 LC surplus from Aim for $90 or .....get this....... .23 a round !
In 2002 420 rounds of Yugo 7.62 x39 (brass) for $45.78 or..... .11 a round shipped from Samco
In 2002 200 rounds of 6.5 x 55 Swedish Ball (really excellent ammo) for $73.80 or .36 a round from Samco.

During this time I was also buying all the 7.62 x 45 ammo I could get my hands on for two obscure rifles. I was paying less than .05 a pop for that stuff until it disappeared forever.

I also bought a full pallet of .30 cal ammo boxes from a place in PA shipped to my door for $6.36 a box. I needed them.

Rome

Random sampling from my ammo locker: Black Hills .223 55gr soft point, Blue box- $13.99, Red box- $20.95. Bricks of .22 LR- Winchester Super-X- $13.95, PMC Zapper- $13.95, Remington Yellow Jacket- $22.95. Federal Gold Medal Target- $19.95. Etc...

Prices of Wolf 7.62x39 have just about doubled since 2005, taking inflation into account :-(

One other thing that has me puzzled is, I can sort of understand the run on .22LR, it's cheap and people shoot a lot of it. But why is it impossible to find .22 WMR? How many people actually shoot that? It wasn't real cheap to begin with either.
