I want to start with a warning that while building is fun, keeping safe will keep it fun. Like fireworks, sharp knives, electric current, fast cars and cheap hookers are meant to be enjoyed responsibly. 22lr is a nasty rimfire that will readily detonate OOB or what's even worse partially OOB while keeping most of the cartridge in the chamber and sending parts of unsupported brass through every opening found, and I mean more than the usuall three. Being rimfire, it will go off when your bolt is misaligned or catches the round wrong ... so keep your hook boogers out of the way and don't make plastic guns.
Before, I start, I just wanted to share some beautitar poetry
So ... it's been many years and Vermont has grown more shit while shorting on shovels, thus I buy a new one, "partially assembled in US" ... probably some dude in US sticking that sticker makes it partially assembled
the shovel is straight, but not straight, so it needs pounding and I dissasemble first. I am having flashback to demilling Romy kits although rivets are kind of wimpy, not like Romanian AK rivets.
Then it's ready.
Wise men say that there are three things you can watch forever: running water, liberals cry and shovel annealing in heat of fire furnace.
I watched it long time, me so drunk that I tried to fetch the anvil and grass kept tripping me so I gave up. A flat rock and another rock to rock on! Rock covers papers motherf***ers.
Don't worry about keeping this closet shovel perfectly straight, for the next step we select a mandrel, a piece of 1"x2" bar. I saw the end off, as Mickey Mouse says in the meme, it will come useful later.
For now we clamp it in the vise, preferably a Yost that came from a Navy ship, because that's def gonna set this shovel straight.
and it's beening tapped straight over the edge of the mandrel
to bend the second edge, it needs to be trimmed, and here I have made the biggest f*** up that will come to haunt me later
the trim is needed to bend over the other edge and be able to clamp it over the mandrel, but I trim it too short, like circumcision gone wrong
once parts are folded, I made this template based on ruger 1022 dimensions
then it's boring time, we drill, we file
but when you file ejector opening, it's magical. Not only it used to eject through, it also keeps the bolt down (or up, depends on shooting position)
that piece, the lip, the labia ferrum needs to be pushed in and sized to keep bolt nice and tight
the bolt may be gay as hell, but in this place it needs to go straight and tight or you are going to hit rim of the cartridge before it enters the hole of the barrel opening
so the Ruger 1022 receiver, aside from the trigger group has two parts, the bolt and the spring/charging handle that makes it go back and forth and the spring needs to be retained so I need to make the indent in the body of the shovel to so do
unfortunately I f***ed up again and realized that it needed to be on other side. But good thing, I f***ed the length wrong too, so when I had a chance to do it right I got both of them covered:
yeah, this is how it suppose to be
now, this being a steel "samped" receiver it needs a f***ing trunion, and that's where that small piece of the mandrel when. Luckily, this trunion is very simple. A hole for a barrel and a dimple for the mag, the holes for abrell retainer are only needed if your barrel is loose and you don't want it to fall out.
... and this is the part where I realized how badly I f***ed up. ... I mean I did the whole build just so I can f***ing rivet damned trunion to the receiver, that's now a lot of ask for. I just want to river the damned thing and the receiver was trimmed too far ... so I f***ing welded a few scraps just so I can nail the g damned rivets it
now that's what I am f***ing talking about!!!
yeah, that's basically it. 1022 is a pretty simple rifle, probably less odd looking than mine, but hey it works, oh and Mora go f*** yourself, celebrate Hell's independent day you aunt.
but if that's not odd looking enough, we need to finally attach the buttstock
this is the shortest that I could manage it to make
it still looks like those Star Wars wookie raider dude rifles
Happy Birthday America, I love you! ... freedom is the only way yeah!
