The gas trap was the first version of the Garand. IIRC, somewhere in the mid- to high 5 digit serial numbers they went to the new configuration. This made the original gas trap versions very highly desireable to collectors.

they would bend the barrel as they heated.the germans tried it on the G41.
I saw them in 1939? at wakefield NG along with Johnson and his rifle.
