WALPOLE, Mass. - Police say a man fired shots after an attempted traffic stop-turned-pursuit from Norwood into Walpole Monday night, which ended when the suspect crashed into a utility pole and injured his head with one of the rounds he allegedly fired.
Norwood Police tried to make a stop around 11:20 p.m. Monday when the suspect fled onto Route 1A south and traveled several miles until hitting a utility pole at Rte. 1A and Kendall Street in Walpole, according to a news release from Walpole Police.
Police say the suspect’s vehicle also hit a Norwood Police cruiser.
After the crash, “multiple gunshots were fired from pursuit vehicle,” Walpole Police said. Officers did not return fire and were not injured during the incident.
One of the shots the suspect fired grazed his head, police said, and Norwood Police officers were able to subdue him. Police did not say whether the injury was intentional or accidental but said the shot came from the suspect's vehicle.
The suspect, 31-year-old Steven Brant, of Norwood, was transported to a hospital with injuries from the crash and the gunshot wound to his head and was arrested by Walpole Police, according to the news release.
Police say Brant will face multiple charges. It's not immediately clear when Brant will be arraigned or what his condition is.
