WALPOLE, Mass. - Police say a man fired shots after an attempted traffic stop-turned-pursuit from Norwood into Walpole Monday night, which ended when the suspect crashed into a utility pole and injured his head with one of the rounds he allegedly fired.

Norwood Police tried to make a stop around 11:20 p.m. Monday when the suspect fled onto Route 1A south and traveled several miles until hitting a utility pole at Rte. 1A and Kendall Street in Walpole, according to a news release from Walpole Police.

Police say the suspect’s vehicle also hit a Norwood Police cruiser.

After the crash, “multiple gunshots were fired from pursuit vehicle,” Walpole Police said. Officers did not return fire and were not injured during the incident.

One of the shots the suspect fired grazed his head, police said, and Norwood Police officers were able to subdue him. Police did not say whether the injury was intentional or accidental but said the shot came from the suspect's vehicle.

The suspect, 31-year-old Steven Brant, of Norwood, was transported to a hospital with injuries from the crash and the gunshot wound to his head and was arrested by Walpole Police, according to the news release.

Police say Brant will face multiple charges. It's not immediately clear when Brant will be arraigned or what his condition is.

Recognizing his name this wasn't his first time introducing himself to law enforcement.

NORWOOD, MA — A North Attleboro man this week was arrested on charges he struck a police officer with his truck during a wild chase through several towns.

Steven Brant, 29, was arrested Wednesday morning and charged with a host of crimes, including assault with a dangerous weapon (his truck) and drugged driving.

The chase ended when Brant ran over stop sticks and crashed, police said.

It all started in Norwood at about 2 a.m., when an officer recognized Brant sitting in his truck, police said. Brant had six warrants for his arrest.

As the officer approached the vehicle, Brant sped off, hitting the officer, police said. The officer sustained minor injuries.

The chase weaved through Foxborough and Walpole, police said. State Police deployed stop sticks in Walpole and Brant ran over them, puncturing a tire, police said. He then crashed in Norwood on Prospect Street and was taken into custody.

Police said 53-year-old Kelly Dutcher of Norwood was in the passenger seat for the chase. She was arrested on a warrant.

I think if they let him off, give him guns and a license back in ONE year, instead of two, like the last time, that will definitely fix him. [rolleyes]

out within 24 hrs, honorary phd. rehab money, beer summit and public apology officers put on administrative leave due to suspects civil rights violations

took me about five times reading to figure out who's head was grazed and how...maybe im just no awake yet lol but I figured it out...yay me

Lol same... adding one key word would have clarified it up...

“One of the shots the suspect fired grazed his own head, police said,...”

I remember that song.

Judge will have him out in no time and not bother with the mandatory 1 year for the gun or ammo charges. It will end up being the PD's fault.

Not sure, does he qualify as a dindu?

Sees like a real upstanding citizen. Too bad he only grazed his head

The Fox25 article initially said he grazed his head, but then followed up with the "bullet was lodged in his head" and is undergoing surgery.

Police initially said one of the shots Brant fired grazed him, but Carmichael said later the injury was more serious and the bullet was lodged in his head. Brant was transported to a Boston hospital where he's undergoing surgery. Police did not say whether the injury was intentional or accidental but said the shot was fired from the suspect's vehicle.

He was the star of GOAL's #MACourtFails social media post today. If you haven't seen that on Twitter or Facebook yet, give it a look and help them spread the word.
