Venezuela's road to ruin began well before the socialists came to power, they just sealed the deal. When I lived in Caracas, Hugo Chavez was still in jail, the President was an aging populist retread who had been president 30 years earlier. His predecessor had been impeached and was on trial for embezzlement and his predecessors was staying out of jail by living in exile with his mistress in Honduras. And so it goes.
