Unacceptable. Americans should be buying guns at double or even triple that rate.

Even before the mass shooting in Newtown, Connecticut last year, which prompted government officials on all levels to introduce legislation that would restrict access to semi-automatic personal defense rifles and other firearms deemed too dangerous for America’s streets, demand had been rising at a rapid pace.

In the last twelve months, over 20 million background checks have been performed by the FBI.

That amounts to a gun being purchased in America about every 1.5 seconds.

It also doesn't account for the fact that 21 states are NICS exempt if you have a CCW permit. A large portion of the firearms purchased from FFLs in those states are done so without a NICS check ever being performed...as was the case for the rifle I bought a couple weeks ago.

On a serious note, it would be great if there were NRA, GOAL, etc. applications right on the counter. Then everyone gets a sales talk on supporting your rights and its easy as heck for someone to walk out w/ their new gun and at least one 2A membership. The pols must be soiling themselves watching the numbers go up on guns, and the only thing scarier (for them) would be informed 2A supporters tracking along w/ gun sales.
