Caught a nasty cold. Athsma flaired up something terrible. Ended up catching an ambulance ride to the hospital Thursday at 3am (first ever). Woke up from a dead sleep and had to use all my strength just to inhale a breath. Rescue inhaler barely touched it so the wife called 911. Unbelievable. Ended up taking a sick day (obviously) for the first time in over a decade. Been home in my chair resting since thursday afternoon. Va will adjust my daily athsma meds. I'll be fine. In all this my Jobs going to hell......in a low spot management wise things are not good......I'll figure it out but I got work to do. All I want to do right now is head to the club and shoot my 1911 and 629 to let off some stress.....haven't been to the club to practice in 7 days but I still feel like ass so thats not gonna happen. Thought about hitting the reloading bench but my heads foggy and don't like making ammo when I'm not my best mentally. So I just started sipping some cheap blackberry brandy to calm my cough and turned on season 1 of longmire for the 3rd time. Lol

Hope you fully recover ASAP. LOL, I've watched all of Longmire 2X and someday might watch it again. [laugh]

I thought I had asthma. My P.C and an Asthma specialist both said I had it. For 2 years I was sucking on an inhaler. I needed by-pass surgery which went great. I asked the surgeon about my asthma and he laughed. When I asked him what he was laughing about, he said I didn't have asthma. He said it was angina and I was getting ready to have a giant heart attack. Everything went great and it let me live long enough to get cancer twice. Lucky me.

I noticed you mentioned the VA. Are you service connected for asthma and receiving any compensation? If not, you may want to look into it for that and any other service caused issues. Be well!

Take care of yourself and make sure you are back before you start up again.

At our age (I am assuming you are close to me) you need to recover enough to avoid a relapse.

It always happens at 3AM. I was anchored off Naushon Island one night and hitting the albuterol every 10 minutes. 3AM. Struggling to breath. Nothing working. Thinking how is USCG helicopter going to find my boat at night??? Managed to live through the night. All the inhalers I had on board were past expired date. Lesson learned.

VA PCP was not happy, said I should not be using the Albuterol, it's a rescue inhaler, I should stay on steroids. I finally found one that worked, but VA took it off the approved list. Sent me something from the lowest bidder. I just use the Albuterol when I need it. Not being able to breath really sucks. Instant panic.

Whacko, hope you’re up and at it soon. Work will always worry you cause you’re a worker. I woke up Sunday night, couldn’t breathe, full snot locker. Found out I have a severe sinus infection. I hope you’re over this soon and back shooting and reloading.

My general rule of thumb when I was in EMS was that anyone who awoke with SOB in the middle of the night was having a cardiac event, not Asthma.

It's a common mistake among not only paramedics, but some doctors as well to treat all SOB with Albuterol. It's common enough that I have a short lesson plan to teach medics how to tell the difference.

It's so common that at least once a week I have to use that lesson to show a medic where he went wrong.

Two other hings I spend considerable time teaching.

1) Patients condition can change, usually not for the better.

2) There is no rule that says a patient can have only one thing wrong with them.

Whacko, hope you feel better soon. You seem to know your disease very well, so my comments don't apply to you.

When I got in the ambulance they went right to an ekg. Er did the full heart workup......no signs of heart attack. Took 3 nebulizer treatments to get me even remotely breathing normal

That's what they should do. Good practice is if the complaint is chest pain, ask about SOB. If the complaint is SOB, get an EKG.

Some of that depends on age, the older the patient the more likely it is to have a cardiac component.
