just a range gun for a new shooter who is petite with smallish handsEither a 226 or a 9mm 1911 for production handguns.
The softest shooting 9mm is a race gun but I'm assuming that isn't what you want to hear. If you want a soft shooting production gun buy a threaded barrel and put a comp on it. 226 or 1911 would be good for that and each has their advantages.
What is the purpose of the firearm and why do you want a "soft shooter"?

yes...she has done well with a SR22..now wants to move up to 9mmProper grip fit / comfort will probably be more important that "softest shooting" a 226 or a 92fs are huge in small hands
Has a .22 been considered (just sayin)

Something like this:View attachment 134835
But that suggestion was before the op qualified the request.
Based on the info, the 9mm 1911 that is suggested before in a single stack design for a smaller grip would be ideal though not cheap.

I'd suggest a steel 9mm 1911, such as a S&W, but get an Advantage Arms .22LR conversion upper for it and start her with that first.yes...she has done well with a SR22..now wants to move up to 9mm
