Rx shooting glasses

Hi all,

Waiting on my first time LTC. Anyone wear prescription shooting safety glasses? Recommendations on brands? I've tried contacts in the past and they don't work out for me.

I honestly just wear my Rx sunglasses. I know I should get safety ones but can spend the money right now. Besides most people I see and shoot with use their sunglasses

I would just get a pair of Rx safety glasses from wherever you get your normal glasses. They usually have a bunch of options in styles and such.

Oakley . They have about 10 lenses to choose from, even one made for shooting.
They can put the lenses in any of their frames.

Be aware that picture does not reflect the actual lens color on 2 of 3 of these. I bought all 3 for ~$25 including shipping. They fit over your Rx glasses and protect sides and top pretty well. NRA sells the same ones for $20/pair.

Similar and a little higher quality OTG glasses can be had at BassPro for ~$45/pair.

ESS (and a few others) make glasses with inserts that you can have your Rx made for. Some years ago these cost me ~$70 plus my Rx inserts (local optician) which will vary with exactly what you need and whatever insurance you might have.

I use the ESS Crossbow Suppressor with the Crossbow Vice Rx Insert (Wire Frame). It's not the cheapest setup out there especially when you factor in getting Rx lenses cut, but it's solid eye protection. The reason I made the investment in a setup like this is because I got sick of dealing with glasses under glasses and the fogging and other issues that presents, I don't wear contacts because I have an astigmatism that is hard to correct using them, and I shoot USPSA matches that have me on the range for 4-8hrs at a time wearing earmuffs and after a few hours of the muffs pressing down on two sets of frames from the glasses they hurt like hell. The Crossbow Supressor have flat ear pieces so they stay comfortable even after hours with the earmuffs on.

Word of warning - I let ESS cut the lenses using the Rx from my optometrist and they didn't get the difficult one quite right. it's close enough that I've been using it for 8mo but I plan on having it redone at some point....if I don't get LASIK that is

Buy prescription safety glasses and save yourself hundreds of $$ as opposed to from a regular eye place. Safety Source Northeast out of Charlton is where get them for work. Last time I got a pair - clear polycarbonate - single prescription w/ basic metal frame (I've used same style frames for 20 yrs w/ them) was well under $50. Your prescription from your eye doctor needs to be no older than 2 yrs - more recent the better especially as you are middle aged like myself. A co-worker got a basic care from his eye doctors office and paid almost $300! I told him work pays for them and he couldn't believe it. Industrial places work need to be low cost which helps every one around. Work paid for mine, but I have purchased pairs on my own using my own personal CC.

I don't work for them, but have been dealing with them for OVER 20 yrs. Family run business, wonderful people. If you need regular safety glasses, they are MUCH less $$ as well. They sell to any one! No special pricing. Gotta love it!

+1. I've had prescription Oakleys for the last 8 years and the optical quality is ridiculous. Zero eye strain. Plus, they're way thicker than the average Oakley lens, so they offer better ballistic protection.

The only problem: they have to be special-ordered from Oakley in California through an authorized Oakley dealer with your prescription. It takes a month, and has cost me about $400 each time. Anyone who tells you otherwise is making their own craptastic lenses and popping them in an Oakley frame.

I all ready had the ESS Crossbows (about a year old). Then later purchased the inserts for the prescription lenses. Had my local guy cut the lenses. He could do the proper measurements.

Quite happy with them.

I used them, but then switched to Rudy Project Rydon. The quality of insert is better, had problems with outer lenses on Bolle not fitting properly. And my wife thinks Rudy's look better on my mug.

I also use the Rudy Rydon glasses. I however currently use the insert RX frame. however will be going back to the eye dr and have new lens made.

I need to get some progressive, prescription safety glasses. I shoot skeet and may shoot pistol in IDPA. about 10 years ago I had a bad experience with insert lens like ESS sells. I found that looking through 2 lens one normal sunglass lens and the second prescription insert decreases visual clarity vs one progressive prescrition sunglass lens. I wonder what folks experience is with single lens progressive lens for shooting. I'm looking at an amber color and bronze lens.


Also looking for a good optomitrist in or near central mass

I ordered safety frame/lens from my eye doctor with my distance only prescription. Anti glare, auto tinting. Family Eye Care in westford. Safety frames are less than half the price of normal frames. Go figure.

Let me just say for me, and I wear progressive eye glasses, these were very comfortable to wear over my glasses. The lens optics did not distort my sight at all. And they did not feel heavy even after extended wear.
Now for the "not so good". These are no fashion statement lookers. Looks kinda geeky, but for me, when I'm on the range (or anywhere else, ask my wife), I don't really care what I look like.
For the price on Amazon, it might be worth checking out.

After many years of experimenting with various prescriptions, including contact lens "monovision", I tried clear, non prescription lenses. Problem solved. Without corrective lenses I can see my front sight clearly and targets down range well enough to make head shots on an IPSC target at 50 yds. The only draw back is that I can't "score" my targets as I shoot them at a match. Shooters requiring corrective lenses ought to try clear lenses, they might work.
