I dug out an old AK kit I bought years ago, and looking it over to possibly do a build, I've noticed a that it has an oversized barrel pin already installed. It's apparently a Romanian, mismatched, with a fully populated US barrel. The pin mics at .313 on my caliper. My concern is that once the barrel is off, I may not be able to set headspace because I'm maxed out. The bolt is non matching, so I attempted to check headspace figuring if it headspaced OK, it should be ok on reassembly.
With just the bolt, not using the carrier, the No-Go gauge does not get full bolt rotation into the trunnion,Go gauge does. If I try it with the carrier, the action closes fully on both. Seems like the carrier does not force the bolt into full rotation. If the bolt cannot fully rotate on the No-Go gauge without the carrier, will head space be good to go? Looking at the interweb, it seems most folks are checking head space with the bolt AND carrier. Any help?
