I sent this to a friend of mine and here is what he sent back:

Funny you should mention saipan. I spent 16 months in its harbor.I was on a seaplane tender and we were in charge of air sea rescue. The island alongside of Saipan was tinian..the b17 or 29s took off every 2 minutes to fly and bomb tokyo...It the plane missed it's first bombing run..they would have to ditch the plane on the way back after making a second run..they didn't have enough gas..We had ships in every quadrant between saipan and the airport on Tinian. There are three islands in the Marianas..the third one is Guam. Hope you get your wish for the gun you are looking for. I have seen enough of combat to be saturated. Keep welll Harry
