LEOMINSTER — An unidentified man was shot and seriously wounded by a police officer about noon today.

Details about the shooting and what led up to it weren't immediately available. Police Chief Peter F. Roddy said he wasn't aware of the victim's condition, but initial accounts from the scene said the man was “unresponsive.”

The chief said that state police officers assigned to the Worcester District Attorney's office were assisting in the investigation. Details about the incident will be supplied this evening, he added.

The shooting occurred in the middle of Stearns Avenue, about halfway between Arlington and Washington streets. The site is less than a block from Northwest Elementary School and only a few blocks from the Leominster campus of UMass Memorial Hospital.

I heard it on the scanner, just bits and pieces. At first I wasn't sure if it was happening in Fitchburg or Leominster, as there was an increase in crap on the scanner from both towns nearly simultaneously. All I heard was a female officer saying "shots fired", followed about a minute later by a male officer just quickly saying "suicide by cop!". Play stupid games.....

A Leominster police officer shot and wounded a man this afternoon in an altercation near a local hospital, shortly after the man was released following a psychiatric evaluation, a spokesman for Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr. said.

After the man allegedly accosted police with a trash barrel and a knife, a Leominster officer fired two shots, one of which struck the man in the back of his upper left leg, said Tim Connolly, a spokesman for Early.

Connolly declined to identify the man, whom he said is currently undergoing surgery at UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester.

The man was brought yesterday to Leominster's HealthAlliance Hospital, part of the UMass system, for a Section 12 review, which refers to the section in state law that allows for emergency restraint and examination of people who may pose a danger for mental health reasons, Connolly said.

After being released today at noon, the man lingered in the neighborhood near the HealthAlliance, prompting a call from a neighbor for undisclosed reasons the hospital, Connolly said. When Leominster police arrived, the man allegedly attacked or threatened to attack, prompting an officer to fire two shots, one of which struck the man and one of which struck a nearby house, Connolly said. That second bullet was recovered without injury or incident, he said.

Thank god that second bullet gave up without a fight.

LEOMINSTER — An unidentified man who allegedly accosted police officers with a knife was shot and seriously wounded by the officer about noon today.

The man underwent surgery at the Leominster campus of UMass Memorial Hospital, then was taken late this afternoon to the hospital's University campus in Worcester. His condition was described as stable.

Worcester District Attorney Joseph D. Early said the man, who apparently had just left the Leominster hospital, was spotted by Leominster officers on nearby Notre Dame Road.

When they attempted to question him, the man brandished a knife and ignored orders to drop it, according to Mr. Early. The officers followed the man to the middle of the street in front of 13 Stearns Ave., where he continued to ignore the officers' commands, he said.

One of the officers then used a taser gun to subdue the man, which wasn't effective. Still wielding a knife, the man was then shot by one of the officers, according to Mr. Early.

The names of the police officers involved in the incident weren't immediately being released.

Just one more Section 12 to add to the list of many. Let's not forget, most have no family that is willing to put up with them anymore, they have no job because they can't hold one, no health insurance, and the final nail, that should be, in the coffin, is that the hospital has to provide a babysitter for them so that they don't continue to hurt themselves while being treated in the hospital or the police have to. So to sum it all up, a huge drain on society and a huge waste of the working taxpayers money.

My god, really? This happened on December 25th, a holiday where 99.9% of businesses and schools are closed. This is a completely irrelevant piece of information thrown in there to scare the sheople.

But, if someone hopped in a spatially isolated time machine and took this shooting back to a school day - then think of the children? [laugh]
