I have in my possession a Mosin Nagant m38 that has seen better days. It has a cracked wooden stock, and a barrell that has ben shot out, proably do to corrosive ammo. But the action itself is in great condition, as is the bolt, and its one of the smoothest Mosin actions I have ever shot. So, I was thinking I could try and find a mill surp barrel to replace the worn out one, add an aftermarket stock, find a good scope mount/scope, and bend the bolt. Well I got to thinking...if I'm going to go that far, why not try and make it shot the best I can by glass bedding the stock, and having a new barrel made.

Well, if I'm going to have a new barrel made, why not go all out. What do you guys think of "necking down" the 7.62x54r cartridge to use a standard .308 bullet, instead of the more common .311 and up bullets it commonly uses. I hand load for both standard .308win and 7.62x54r so I don't think making ammo for this oddity would be a problem. Does anyone know someone who might make, and install the new barrel for me?

I agree with Pilgrim.

Unless the crack is at the tang area of the stock, super glue it, and shoot clean the bore and keep it for a blaster. I'm sure even at 50 yards it'll still be a plinker.

I looked into something similar at one point. Finding a smith that wants to deal with it, without dropping some serious cash, isn't that easy. I agree it would be best to buy another action, as from what I have been told, it can be very difficult to remove the barrel without hurting the action. I have wanted to do the same thing for some time, though I was thinking more along the lines of 6x54R or 7x54R, or maybe even .338x54R. I love the mosin action, and think a custom rifle built on one would be awesome. If you end up going for it, let us know how it goes.

I have a good m38, m44, and 91/30 already. Its not about the collectors value, I just want to have a unique hunting rifle. I don't mind dropping some cash.

I found a bunch of really custom Mosins, not just restocked stuff either. There are pics below of the best stuff I could find. Also, links to a thread about rebarreling and pics of a custom .260 Mosin. And the bottom link is for Bullpup Mosin stocks. At least check out the thread, as the .260 Mosin is just incredible.

Don't get discouraged if you really want to build a custom Mosin, plenty of people have, just not many others are interested. You could build it on a different action, but doing a custom Mosin is far different and more unique than any other action you can find. If you want a truly custom rifle, go for it.

Also, in the thread it is mentioned that Benchmark will do custom Mosin barrels.

If you're really hell bent on tackling a custom project, do some of the work yourself and save some cash. Jamie's step by step project is one you can try and then just find someone to swap out your barrel. http://surplusrifle.com/reviews/oddsandends3/index.asp
Check out the build cost on the right hand side of the page, and thats just using cheap conponents. You could easily go over a grand for what you are talking about doing to a Mosin, and for that money I'd go out and buy a mint M38 and a Savage model 10 with decent optics and have 2 nice rifles and one blaster.[grin]

thanks for all the advice and pics. not sure what i'm going to do. i think sks ray made a good point about a mint m38, and a good modern rifle.

If you go to the second page of this thread, you'll see a nice custom Mosin hunting rifle that the poster claims holds a very nice group at 600 yards. It can be done.

I would have posted a direct link but the site is hanging on me right now.

I would really like to find a 91/30 nice barreled receiver and put it in a newer stock, just to have a nice, comfortable and better fitting target gun. A Finn with a .308 barrel would be ideal, but those are few and far between, and I wouldn't separate a complete Finn to do it.
