Midwest Bird Hunt - Advice / Suggestions

I am starting to look into heading into the Midwest next year for upland bird hunting. I am looking for advice or suggestions from anyone that has done this before. Whether it be advice on states, or time of year, what not to do, anything really.

I can tell you that if I wanted to go after ring necks I'd look real hard at South Dakota. I never saw so many as when I passed through on the way to Montana. I saw thousands just from the highway.

A childhood friend of mine and his dad regularly went to South Dakota for bird hunting. Looked amazing from the pictures I saw.
