Mace requires firearms class?

Does the 40$ mace only fid require a firearms safety course? A friend who applied for it in marlboro said she was told she needed it. I thought the 40$ fid was course-free.

Wife just recieved her's, no class required.

Millbury Police just had my mom fill out the info on their computer and pay the $40. There is no class requirement for a restricted fid for mace.

...an applicant for a firearms identification card for the sole purpose of purchasing or possessing chemical mace, pepper spray or other similarly propelled liquid, gas or powder designed to temporarily incapacitate shall not be required to complete a basic firearms safety course as a prerequisite for receiving such card.

Sounds like some towns are making up their own fee structure and rules for a Restricted FID. Not at all surprising since they don't abide by any of the other laws wrt license issuance!
